Holika was a demoness in Hindu mythology, who was burnt to death with help of Brahma by Prahlad. On the night before Holi, symbolic pyre of Holika is burnt signifying the triumph of good over evil, and death of Holika is celebrated as Holi. (Photgraphs of celebration in Pune by Pushkar Achyute)
