According to police, Alagiri was booked, along with 52 other DMK workers, for assaulting Tahsildar M Kalimuthu, who is also the Returning Officer for Melur Assembly segment; and a videographer when they tried to capture Alagiri’s visit to a temple in Keelavalavu in Melur.

Kalimuthu had gone on the directive of the Election Commission. We only did our duty. But DMK functionaries intimidated us, abused and roughed up,” he later said.

The case was registered last night on a complaint from the tahsildar. Earlier, about 300 revenue officials have staged dharna demanding arrest of close aides of Alagiri.

Madurai is a stronghold of Alagiri.
