Top Former Goa Based RSS Pracharak Arrested in Connection with a 24 Year Old Hate Speech Case

The  Deccan  Police have arrested  a 78-year-old former RSS Pracharak who is  currently living a life of a ‘Sanyasi’ Swami Durganand Nadkarni, in connection with a  case related to  inflammatory speeches and writings  in 1990. The arrest has come after a time span of twenty years and the suspect has been absconding after a case was registered with the said police station.

The Deccan-Gymkhana police on Tuesday afternoon, produced him in the court, where he was released on bail.

According to the Deccan Police,   Nadkarni is the spiritual Guru with chief minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar coming to seek his blessings. In 1990, the police ,  had lodged a complaint against Nadkarni and Milind Ekbote, the founder of Hindu Janjagriti Samiti and Hindu hardliner under section 153 ( Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.

Senior police inspector, Pravin Chaugule of the police station said that, Nadkarni and Ekbote had written  inflammatory articles  with the intention to create rift between two religions and afterward delivered some inciting speeches against a particular community.

He further added that after the case was registered, Ekbote was arrested and released on the bail but Nadkarni went absconding.

Nadkarni before leaving city, continued as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh pracharak and was instrumental in nurturing  and mentoring numerous swayamsevaks and karyakarta (volunteers and workers) of RSS.

Police naik, Mahesh Nimbalkar, who traced Nadkarni said that as he was in the wanted list of the city police, they tried to trace his whereabout and found that he was currently staying at Fonda in Goa and living a life of Sanyasi.

He said that after leaving Pune, he kept touring India and took Sanyas in Rishikesh. “Current, he has been living an austere life at Fonda in Goa.  A disciple of  Nadkarni, who had come to Pune along with him said that the Deccan-Gymkhana police informed them about the case after which  Swamiji himself showed interest to come to the city.

Born as Durganand Nadkarni in 1936 at Ankola in Karwar, he came in contact with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1942.
