The Real Problems of Aligarh Muslim University Our HRD Minister Should look into

Aiman Wasia for BeyondHeadlines

Aligarh Muslim University Women’s College Students’ Union (AMUWCSU) and AMU Students’ Union (AMUSU) on Wednesday organized a joint protest against alleged “biased media reports” over the issue of access to girls to the university’s central Maulana Azad Library. More than 2000 girls took out a procession that culminated at the Sir Syed crossing in Aligarh proves what every girl in the campus want.

Our honorable HRD minister Smriti Irani said the VC’s statement was an “insult to daughters” but how is that the very same ‘daughters’ are now protesting against a biased media and the statement of the HRD minister. Instead of that honorable minister have to think about:-

  • Giving minority status to Aligarh Muslim University so that these ‘insulted daughters’ can enjoy more freedom in terms of various facilities a minority institution can enjoy, and moreover the facilities girls can enjoy.
  • HRD minister need to focus on safety issues related to women in the university.
  • Electricity, one of the major problems here, should be solved.
  • Sanitation, water and mess problems should be prioritized for discussion.

Now question arises what is a minority institution. “Minority Educational Institution” means an institution established and administered by the minorities under clause (1) of article 30 of the Constitution and so declared by an Act of Parliament or by the Central Government or declared as a minority educational institution under the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Act, 2004.

The following facts should be proved for grant of minority status to an educational institution on religious basis:

(i) that the educational institution was established by a member/members of the religious minority community;

(ii) that the educational institution was established for the benefit of the minority community; and

(iii) that the educational institution is being administered by the minority community.

 Again girls are targeted not for their upliftment but for political motives.
