Kasauli: Talent can be found anywhere and can be nurtured at any age. Among the gushing pine trees on top of the hills in town of Kasauli lies abundant talent. We Sprawl, a creative group based out of Delhi, went to train this existing talent of one of the top schools in North India- Pinegrove School in Dharampur, near Kasauli. We Sprawl trained students in basics of photo journalism and documentary making through a four day workshop this month.

“Talent is at a lot of places. All it needs is little bit of polishing so that it takes the right directions. Young aspiring people need such platforms. That’s our only aim that is to give them opportunities. They should be aware of photography, journalism and film making as career options. You do not know the kind of path breaking thinking they have. It’s completely out of the box. They never fail to surprise us. Their simple questions break the conformist pattern of education we have,” says Aqsa Anjum, one of the founder members freelance film maker and a trainer in a media institute in Delhi.

The workshop began with theory of basics of photojournalism and documentary making. Then they get hands on training with professional equipments like Nikon D-40, Canon 1100 and PD 177. Children clicked some amazing photographs, shot the documentary and suggested the story themselves. The documentary shot by them is at now editing stage.

“They came up with brilliant topics like taking care of the environment around them, long lasting friendships formed during school times and how their school is helping them become better human beings. Our experience was great. Though we went to teach there, we ourselves learnt a lot of things. The staff and the students were nice,” says S Preet Kaur, founder member of the group, , freelance film maker and radio presenter in Delhi .

“We salute the talent in these young aspiring students. They are honest, expressive, and enthusiastic and have fresh ideas. It’s important for them to learn such things as this will them in the future. So it’s important to learn and do hard work today for a great tomorrow. That’s the motto of our school, as written in our crest- By toil to stars. We aspire to Inspire! We in school believe that they should do a lot of activities beyond academics like photography and film making. The students are the real heroes; we are simply the guiding lights, “says Samiksha Singh, Head Administration (Sr. School), Pine Grove School. The School was established in the early nineties and has seen itself grow and take great leaps under Headmaster Captain AJ Singh.

‘We Sprawl’ is a group of Delhi based group of freelance journalists, film makers, theatre persons, radio presenters and photographers. They keep on conducting theatre, film making, photography and journalism for privileged and under privileged children around the country. Its founder members are all young dynamic creative female professionals who founded the group in 2010. The group has worked with TERI and PVR Nest, CSR unit of PVR cinemas, conducted workshops in schools like GD Goenka, Father Agnel school, St Xaviers School, TCV School and NGOs like Deepalaya and Kutumb.

BeyondHeadlines News Desk

‘Save sharmila Solidarity Campaign(SSSC)’which is a nation-wide struggle against the neglection and suppression of Irom Sharmila Chanu, a Manipuri poet turned activist who has been on a relay hunger-protest for last12 years just to protest against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur. For this, SSSC has organized various events such as ‘Save Sharmila Jan Karwan’ from Srinagar to Imphal, Solidarity Fasts, Candle Vigils, Documentary Sessions, Public Awareness Rallies, Sitting in Protests, Delegation Meets with NHRC & Memorandum to Prime Minister etc successfully in the past.

SSSC has previously decided to organize a ‘Save Sharmila Week’ from 8th march i.e. International Women s Day to 14th march i.e. Irom Sharmila’s birthday but now seems a bit change in the programme. On 14th we are not organizing any event as Sharmila herself told us not to hold any kind of celebration on 14th march on her birthday as it may divert the issue. In her recent visit to Delhi, Irom Sharmila again repeated her commitment about democracy, democratic values and non violence. She openly declared that her struggle is completely nonviolent. We strongly feel that now it is the responsibility of all of us who believes in democratic values and non violence to come forward and support her.

In the wake of all these concerns, we started the week today itself from Chhenai in Tamilandu.national secretary of khudai khidmatgar and SSSC member Inamul Hasan said that SSSC is a solidarity forum whose chief motto is to make people aware about the strug On the inauguration of Save Sharmila Week, the gle of Irom Sharmila. He further said that in her recent visit to Delhi, Irom once again assured the nation that her fight is for establishing the democracy and restoring the peace only. Thus this becomes our responsibility to come forward in support of her cause. By the Save Sharmila Week, we want to send the message that she is not alone now but we are with her. We have strong feelings for Irom and her struggle because she is a true lover of democracy and a responsible citizen of this country. She thus, too has every right to get heard. Her struggle shows her faith in democracy and non-violence. Inamul Hasan said that on 12th march SSSC leader Faisal khan with volunteer will sit on fast with Irom and will also discuss the future actions with her as on 12th the Govt will release Irom for a short period of time due to some constitutional provisions.

The Well known women rights activistst Anandhi ammal of Tamilnadu said that from today we are taking this responsibility to spread Irom’s message of establishing democracy and restoring justice not only in Tamilnadu but in the entire South India. She also said it is much shocking that in these 12 years, not a single delegation from Govt. took a pain meet Irom Sharmila or took her concern which she was supposed to get being a citizen of this great & democratic champion nation!

Social activist Gandhimathy said that Irom fight is totally non violent so how can we ignore her if we truly believe in Gandhian values. He also made an appeal to all Gandhians of the nation to come forward in her support.

The renowned social activist Sendhil Nayagam said that AFSPA is anti democratic legislative arrangement in a democratic country like India. This type of law just makes our long and cherished democratic values and traditions week. Thus there is a high time now that this law should be removed.

Besides the speakers, a big gathering of women, social activists, Gandhians, Youth and people from all walks participated showing their solidarity with Irom’s struggle.

BeyondHeadlines News Desk

The Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India (CERI) is spearheading a campaign in the country for Proportional Representation system in order to enhance the inclusive character of Indian democracy and governance. Though Indian democracy is hailed as the largest one in the world, we still waste about 70 % of votes election after election and only make a woefully minority party to govern. We still live with the British legacy of FPTP resulting in enormous role corruption, violence, casteism and communalism. This results in cumulatively ineffective governance. 89 countries in the world have already shifted to Proportionate Electoral system while only 60 countries, mostly former colonies of the British, are still sticking on to FPTP.

India, being a multicultural society with a multiparty system, is badly in need of shifting to proportional representation system, as it provides inclusive space for minority social groups like Dalits, Adivasis/Tribals, religious, ethnic and sexual minorities, women and also the Working Class. The CERI campaign is specifically focused on bringing about this change in India. However, the knowledge bank in India on PR system is relatively low.

CERI, which has made great strides in its campaign for Proportional Electoral system in India has organized a series of events in Delhi starting from 06 March to 08 March.

We takes this opportunity to invite you to a press conference on March 5, 2013 at the Delhi Press Club, New Delhi starting at 3 pm.

New Delhi: On 29th of January 2013, Debating Community, JNU organised a three hour participatory workshop on RTI in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Impressive number of people, including students, faculty members, and media-persons attended the workshop. Ashish Shukla, President, Debating Community, JNU, started the proceedings by outlining the importance of Right to Information Act. In his initial remarks he said that entire Act revolves around “transparence and accountability”, and termed it a landmark legislation which aims to empower a billion plus Indians by giving them the right to know.

After this Abdul Hafiz Gandhi, Doctoral Fellow, Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, JNU, made a mesmerizing and powerful presentation on the Right to Information Act. During his presentation, Mr. Gandhi analysed each and every important provision of the Act with precision and great detail. He repeatedly told the audience that RTI is a tool and not a weapon.

He even discussed passive and often negative attitude of various public authorities. At one point of time he stunned the audience by telling how the Supreme Court of India, initially tried to exclude itself from the scanner of RTI and how it went to Delhi High Court on the issue which was later decided by the Delhi High Court against the Supreme Court. At the moment the case is pending in the Supreme Court itself. Besides this, Mr. Gandhi underlined various problems and challenges faced by RTI activists in their day to day life.

After the discussion, Mr. Ashish Shukla, who is also pursuing his Ph.D. from School of International Studies, in an interaction told us that “Debating Community” is primarily aimed to promote the debating culture and make people aware of various issues of national and international importance by organizing discussions and workshops. He assured us that such programmes would be organised by “Debating Community” on a regular basis where young scholars and experts would be invited to make presentations on their respective areas.
