Chennai: The total votes polled today in Tamil Nadu remained a little less than Kerala and Puducherry. Over 65 percent of the electorate in the state today cast their votes as polling ended peacefully in all 234 assembly constituencies. Although polling had closed at 5 p.m., voters who came before the closing time were allowed to cast their vote, officials said.
The polling was by and large peaceful, they said. According to officials, the final voter turnout would exceed 70 percent.
The state has 4.6 crore voters.
Prominent of the 2,773 candidates in the fray include DMK leader and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi (Tiruvarur), his arch rival and AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa (Srirangam), Karunanidhi’s son and Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin (Kolathur) and DMDK actor-founder Vijayakanth (Rishivandyam).
