Anna Writes Letter To PM; Demands “Stringent Laws” to Protect Scribes

New Delhi: Anti-graft Crusader Anna Hazare has written a letter to the Prime Minister demanding “stringent laws” to curb out “heinous attacks” against journalists.

In a letter dated June 18, a copy of which is available with the BeyondHeadlines, the Lokpal Drafting Committee Co-chairman, expressed his concern  over “the growing attacks on journalists” and has called it a “serious threat to India’s democratic structure.”

Jyotirmoy Dey, Mid-Day editor (investigations) was shot dead in a residential area in Powai, a northeast suburb in Mumbai, by unidentified assailants on June 11.

Calling such an attack “heinous” he requested the PM to look into the matter.

In the letter, which is also cc (copies also sent to) Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister RR Patil, Annaji wrote, “Stringent laws will need to be enacted as soon as possible to curb out such kinds of heinous attacks.”
