New Delhi: A BJP councilor today termed late noted artist Maqbool Fida Husain a “traitor.” The remark triggered unruly scenes at a meeting leading to its abrupt adjournment.

Trouble broke out during the general body meeting of the Hubli-Dharawad civic corporation here while the members were paying homage to departed leaders and eminent personalities.

In his remarks, Shivanand Muttannavar referred to Husain as a “traitor”.

Enraged Congress and JDS councillors threw a water bottle at the Mayor Poorna Patil’s table and demanded that Muttannavar tender an apology for the remark.

Patil later told reporters that action would be initiated against the councillor.

Lamenting over the incident, she said such remarks should not have been made against an artist like Husain.

She said that though Muttannavar agreed to apologise later, the Opposition gave him no chance to do so, forcing her to adjourn the meeting.
