Patna: BJP won the assembly bypoll in Bihar for the lone seat of Purnia assembly.

BJP’s Kiran Kesri won by a margin of 23,665 votes. Her nearest rival was LJP-supported Congress rival  Ramcharitra Yadav.

BJP is the coalition partner in the state.  Kiran rode on the sympathy vote, whose MLA husband Raj Kishore Keshri was stabbed to death on January 4 earlier this year.

Son of slain CPI (M) MLA Ajit Sarkar, Amit Sarkar was finished third.

The bypoll was held on June 25. The BJP tally in state will thus remain intact.

The bypoll on June 25 was needed following the killing of Raj Kishore Keshri.

The bypoll has brought to light the rift between Ram Vilas Paswan nd Lalu Prasad Yadav, who fought last assembly election together and were felt humiliation.

While none fielded their candidates they supported different nominees. LJP supported the Congress candidate while RJD sided with Amit Sarkar.
