Anna Writes to PM; Slams Delhi Police Preconditions on Protest

BeyondHeadlines Staff Reporter

New Delhi: Anna Hazare wrote to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh slamming the conditions imposed by Delhi Police on him for giving permission to fast from August 16. In his letter to the prime minister, Anna questioned the rule under which restrictions are being imposed on him by the Delhi Police.

He slammed the move stating that no democracy has such restrictions for a peaceful protest. The Delhi police had asked for an undertaking that he will not fast for more than three days and will give him a venue only after that.

Team Anna, which had requested for a permission to fast for 30 days, is unhappy with the police’s decision.

Lokpal bill drafting committee member Prashant Bhushan said that this was illegal and unconstitutional.

“Sitting on a fast is the most peaceful way of protest. If they don’t give us permission, people will go and sit on a protest at Jantar Mantar, we will use our fundamental right.”

Meanwhile, members of the ‘India Against Corruption’ organisation demonstrated outside the UN building in New York extending support to Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.
