New Delhi: Welfare Party of India (WPI) has welcomed the government’s decision to uphold the minority status of Jamia Millia Islamia, a central university based in the national capital.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has filed an affidavit before a bench of the Delhi High Court  comprising Chief Justice Dipak Mishra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna and backed the minority status granted to Jamia by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI).

“It is an important decision taken with legal parameters, and the Welfare Party extends its sincere support. It has been a genuine demand due for decades being made by the minority community,” said P.C. Hamza, general secretary of the party in a letter addressed to union HRD Minister Kabil Sibal.
