New Delhi: The Second Prof. Iqbal Ansari Memorial Lecture will be held on the topic of “Sedition, anti-Terror Laws and Democracy” here at the Indian Law Institute (ILI), on Saturday, 13th October, 3: 30 pm onwards. It will be delivered by senior Advocate and National General Secretary of People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), Dr V Suresh, who have extensively worked on the subject, both as a practicing criminal lawyer as well as human rights activist. The event will be chaired by the senior journalist and former Editor of Tehelka Weekly, Mr. Ajit Sahi.

On this occasion, a presentation will also be made by Advocate Mayur Suresh, a practicing criminal lawyer at Delhi Courts and Researcher at University of London, UK. Adv. Mayur presentation will be with the special reference to how these laws are being used in Terror cases and to target youth and organizations of particular community, Muslim.

This annual lecture series is instituted last year in the memory of veteran human rights activist, Prof. Iqbal Ansari, who passed away on 13thOctober 2009. He was one of the most visible activists in India. A teacher of English literature, he had turned full time to a Human Rights’ activist, and, along with other noted Civil libertarians like V M Tarkunde, Justice Rajendra Sachar, he championed the protection and advancement of Civil Rights in India. Last year, the lecture was delivered by former-IAS and noted social activist, Mr. Harsh Mander.
