Pune: After Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar gave a virtual clean chit to Pune’s divisional commissioner, Prabhakar Deshmukh, who is alleged to have amassed huge property running into hundreds of crores by wrong means, the opposition BJP has now approached the state’s anti corruption department for a thorough probe into the bureaucrat’s assets. Meanwhile an RTI activist in Satara, Mr. Shivaji Raut, where the alleged illegal land deal took place has written to the chief minister Prithviraj Chavan appealing for protection after having received threats from some people asking him not to take the commissioner’s case ahead.
There have been reports appearing in the media about the commissioner’s land deals where he bought reserved lands along with a Pune builder for a pittance and then changing the status of the land from agriculture to non-agriculture was reaping huge benefits. However Mr. Ajit Pawar whose party has always defended the bureaucrat declining to conduct a probe, BJP’s Kirit Somayya met the additional DG, anti corruption bureau demanding a probe and the means by which the bureaucrat had amassed his wealth.
The commissioner has flatly denied all the charges against him. “I have sent a legal notice to a channel for airing the news without any basis,” Deshmukh told Indian Express. However the channel to whom the notice has been sent told our correspondent that the channel stands by its story and that the commissioner has been asked to take the matter to the court. “Its nothing but a pressure tactic. The officer thought that we will succumb to pressure and stop airing his news. We have replied to the notice and have infact asked the commissioner to please take the matter in court. We are pretty sure he will not go in court as all his illegal works would then get exposed,” said the channel’s representative.
