New Delhi: Living up to its foundation and commitment to the ideals of social justice, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a central university under the act of Parliament, admitted 27 street children in various classes in its primary schools on 11 April 2011.
All these children have been taken from Harsh Mandar’s Ummeed Aman Ghar, functioning under the auspices of the Centre for Equity Study, a welfare organization that provides shelter, food and education to the homeless street children and night shelter to the destitute.
These children have been admitted to ensure education of the poorest of the poor, and all these children have been exempted from paying any school fee. This gesture on the part of Jamia’s Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung has received wide acclaim within the JMI. Director of Jamia Schools Prof. Mujtaba Khan lauded this extraordinary effort.
The vice chancellor on his part said, “The challenge ahead will be to ensure that we are able to make the students feel comfortable in the school environment so that they can be integrated fully into the teaching-learning process.”
Jamia Millia Islamia, a university, not only has schools under its aegis but also runs balak-mata centres in different parts of the city. These centres cater to the education and vocational training of children and women, who come from not very well to do background.
