New Delhi: A large part of the land of city’s famous Millennium Indraprastha Park is also a waqf property, an RTI query has revealed to the surprise of many.

In response to an application filed by BeyondHeadlines under the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2005, the Delhi Waqf Board has informed that 10 acres of the land of the Indraprastha Millennium Park belongs to the board.

The park is spread over an area of 34 acres of land and is situated on the Ring Road, near ISBT Sari Kale Khan. The park that was developed from 2000 onward was inaugurated by the then union Home Minister LK Advani in 2002.

“The Delhi Government has taken over 10 acres of land of Qabristan Ahley Islam for its Millennium Park. Remaining 4 acres of the land has been given by Delhi Waqf Board to the managing committee of Qabristan Ahley Islam,” the reply to the query says.

Interestingly, the board in response to an RTI filed earlier, had said that only a “small” portion of graveyard was used in the famous park.

This information has again cast serious concerns over the utilisation of waqf lands, that too in the national capital.
