New Delhi: India’s victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 was celebrated with full enthusiasm in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia and its vicinity Batla House. A special screening of the final match was arranged in the Jamia’s campus, where some thousand students gathered. Within minutes of the victory, hundreds of elated supporters were seen dancing, playing music and beating drums at Batla House Chowk. Many youngsters went on their bikes and cars towards India Gate.

Jamia and Batla House were in headlines in 2008 after an “encounter” of two suspected terrorists. Later, two students of Jamia were also arrested in that connection, and they are still in custody. Since then, Batla House and Jamia Millia Islamia were labelled as the “ghetto” of terrorism. Recently, after Jamia was declared a “minority” institution, many raised the rhetoric of “ghettoization.”
