Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee led government in West Bengal is inching closer to returning lands to unwilling farmers in Singur.

As the legal battle over the “abandoned” Tata’s factory site has begun in the Calcutta High Court, the state government appears to be hurriedly taking over the land. Calcutta HC has earlier refused to pass interim order.

The half built factory site was virtually taken over by the Hooghly administration on Thursday. Around 600 security personnel have been deployed.

When asked by the media, Industries minister Partha Chatterjee did not confirm it as “the matter is sub judice,” but hinted when he said, “The process is under way. Let us wait and see what happens.”

The Land Rehabilitation and Development Act (2011) have already been notified.

Meanwhile Justice Saumitra Pal expressed “embarrassment” over alleged pilferage at the site. He has further demanded a ground report.

“Unwilling” farmers meanwhile expressed gratitude to Mamata Banerjee for keeping her words and are hopeful that they will get back their land back.
