Mumbai: According to an RTI reply received form Mumbai Police Commissioner Office on 20 June 2011, there is huge manpower shortage in the police service.Among 1735 sanctioned posts of PSI a whopping 822 are vacant (47%) whereas among 605 sanctioned posts of API 259 are vacant (42%).

The proportion of sanctioned officers, anyway, is not at apr with the bulging city population and almost half of it is vacant.

PSI’s and API’s do most of the important work when an FIR is registered – from investigating to filing charge sheet.

The work is clearly getting affected. In response to another RTI, Mumbai police accepted that in .B. Marg Police station only 9 charge sheets were filed out of 1737 FIRs registered in the Police Station from between 2005 and 2010.

The D.B. Marg Sr. police inspector later told this writer that there was a mistake in that RTI and a corrected copy has been sent to me but its been months and no such ‘corrected’ copy has yet arrived.
