Team Anna Refuses to Sign Undertaking for Aug 16 Fast

BeyondHeadlines Staff Reporter

New Delhi: Anna Hazare and his team of civil society have refused to sign the undertaking from Delhi Police for Anna Hazare’s August 16 fast. The undertaking that includes 22 conditions for the fast was handed over to Team Anna on Saturday.

Anna has been granted permission to hold his fast from August 16 to August 18, 6 pm. The undertaking says that 4000 to 5000 people, 50 cars and 50 bikes will be allowed. The letter also says that no plants can be harmed.

A statement by the Delhi Police said, “Due to legal and administrative constraints we have offered them a three day dharna at the park subject to their giving an undertaking that they will vacate the park on the third day evening. We shall permit them once they give this undertaking.”

All five members from Team Anna have to sign an undertaking to this condition.

Team Anna had requested for permission to fast for 30 days and is unhappy with the police’s decision.

Lokpal Bill Drafting Committee member Prashant Bhushan called the undertaking unconstitutional and said that they will protest at Jantar Mantar if they are not granted permission.

“We had told the Delhi police that the fast will not go on for more than 10 days, putting conditions is completely unreasonable,” he said. “We will have to exercise our fundamental right, we will go to Jantar Mantar and sit there,” he added.

Meanwhile, Anna Hazare has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to step in.
