New Delhi: The Welfare Party of India termed the recent incident of the police firing at Gopalgarh in Bharatpur District, Rajasthan, as a barbaric act, which proved the bias attitude of the police towards Muslims.

WPI President Mujtaba Farooq

Party’s National President Mujtaba Farooq said that initial reports and findings of various organizations have made it clear that it was the police who made the situation more volatile by intervening and using force against the people in a mosque. The land issue, which was almost resolved by the local panchayat, was reignited by the local police.

“The incident of Bharatpur cannot be viewed as an isolated incident rather it is a continuation of incidents happened in the past. The police bias against Muslims is not unknown and has been witnessed at Bhagalpur and Forbesganj in Bihar, Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh etc. Such frequently occurring incidents are highly alarming, and it proves the communal attitude of the Central and state governments and administrative authorities. Police officers are rarely indicted and even in such cases where there are adverse reports, they manage to escape from punitive actions,” he said.

The party strongly asked the state government to take stern action against the concerned police officers.

“We urge the central government to immediately intervene and take all necessary steps to curb violence and provide peace and security to the people of Bharatpur. We also demand the central government to ensure that Muslims of Bharatpur be given justice,” Farooq added.
