ACHR Condemns the Maoists for Killing Congress Leaders in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today condemned the attacks on the Congress leaders by the Maoists that led to killing of at least two Congress leaders including Mahendra Karma and Godi Madwani, and injuries to many including Congress leader Mr V C Shukla. The Maoists opened fire opened fire and triggered a blast targeting a convoy of vehicles at Darbha Ghat section in Bastar district today i.e. 25 May 2013. The Congress leaders were on their way to Keshloor after participating in the “Parivartan Yatra” at Sukma when the Maoists opened fire at their vehicles between Darbha and Tongpal on Jagdalpur-Sukma road.

“There is no justification for the attacks on the unarmed civilians belonging to the Congress party. The murder of the unarmed civilians constitutes grave violation of international humanitarian laws including Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. The Maoists leadership must bear the criminal responsibility for the attacks. ” – stated Mr Suhas Chakma, Director of Asian Centre for Human Rights.

Asian Centre for Human Rights called upon the Central Government and the State Government of Chhattisgarh to bring the culprits to justice.
