The relationship between a doctor and his patients is based entirely on trust. Patients trust doctors are supposed to be next only to God and must have ethical conduct and honesty. They should not take any advantage of the patients’ implicit trust in them, and it would be a worst case scenario if the doctor rapes a patient after deliberately administering sedatives to her.

This trust sedatives was shattered in a recent incident in when a 51 year old doctor working at a government hospital was arrested for raping a 21 year old patient in a clinic in  Gautampuri, East Delhi.

Delhi Doctor Sedates and Rapes Patient“Dr. Narendra Singh, the chief Medical Officer of Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, advised the victim to undergo an ultrasound. He lured her to a clinic outside the hospital, where he raped her after giving her adrink laced with sedatives,” a police officer told the media. He explained that after check-up of the patient, Dr. Singh asked the victim to go to the Bansal Pathlab at Gautampuri for an ultrasound test, where the crime was committed.

“The girl claims she woke up around 5.45 pm and realize that she has been raped. She called up the police. Subsequently, she was taken to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where rape was confirmed. Based on the girl’s claims, we have arrested the accused even as further probe is on,” said a senior officer.

The victim told the police she realized she had been raped after regaining consciousness at the lab. The accused doctor had allegedly lied to her about the hospital not having ultrasound facility and asked her to come to the lab.

This indicates that the rape was pre-meditated and planned and not a spur-of-the-movement crime.

A police officer said the doctor allegedly drugged the girl before sexually assaulting her. A case of rape has been registered at the Seelampur Police Station in Delhi.

A doctor who rapes his patient after lying to her, luring her and then administering sedatives is mentally sick and his conduct is bringing a bad name to the profesion by doing untold harm to the bond between doctor and patient. It would be a sad day indeed if such incident force the patients to start looking at doctors with doubt, suspicion and apprehension.

What use are the laws against rape and laws to uphold ethical and moral conduct of doctors if such incidents occur and shake the public’s faith in the system? Perhaps, rapists commit such acts in such a brazen manner just because they are not brought to justice swiftly and also there is no certainty of conviction. To put an end to this type of crime, the police will have to do a through investigation with evidence that stands up in court. The medical fraternity should immediately distance itself from such doctors to save the fair name of the profession. (Courtesy: Medical Times)
