Muslim Leader Babukhan Passes Away in Hyderabad

Eminent Muslim leader and former Andhra Pradesh minister Bashiruddin Babukhan had passed away in Hyderabad on 15 September following a prolong illness. He was 72.

He was a well-known educationist and philanthropist in Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Babukhan was a former leader of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and served as minister in the cabinets of NTR and N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Mr. Babukhan held portfolios of Higher Education, Major Industries, Tourism and Minorities Welfare during 1989 and 1994-1998. In 1998, he resigned as minister when TDP supported the BJP-led government at the Center.

He was very active in social and charitable activities. The Babukhan brothers, Basheeruddin and Ghiasuddin, envisioned and established various institutions to uplift the community.

The Babukhan family notably runs following charitable/educational institutions: Hyderabad Zakat and Charitable Trust (HZCT), United Economic Forum (UEF), Foundation for Economic & Educational Development (FEED), and Ghiasuddin Babukhan Charitable Trust (GBKCT).

Mr. Babukhan was also associated with All India Muslim Educational Society (AIMES), All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), Confederation of Muslim Educational Institutions of India (CMEII), among others.

A leading builder, Mr. Babukhan was the man behind several multistoried complexes in Hyderabad including Babu Khan Estate, near L.B. Stadium in Basheerbagh. It is said that his father Khan Bahadur Abdul Karim Babu Khan built ‘Gandhi Bhavan’ in Hyderabad and donated it to the Congress Party.

On hearing the sad news, AIMMM President Zarful Islam Khan stated: “He was a dear friend and an important pillar and source of strength of the Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat. The country and the millat have lost a great son whose disappearance from the scene will be felt for long.”

Welfare Party of India, AP President, Malik Motasim Khan expressed his deep condolences on the demise of Mr. Babukhan.

“He was one of the great leaders who strived for the welfare of the Muslims in particular and people in general,” he posted on FB.

“We lost great leaders during these months like Jb. LalJan Basha sb and Basheeruddin Babu Khan sb. May Allah bless them with best reward in Jannah. Aameen.”
