INSAAN International Foundation has filed an RTI application seeking details on action taken by the Maharashtra government on the Mahmoodur Rahman Committee report.
Addressed to CM Office, Home Department and Minority Welfare Department (Government of Maharashtra), the RTI application also seeks a certified copy of the report, details about expenditure incurred in preparing the report and all details about steps taken by Maharashtra Govt.
In order to know social, economic and educational conditions of Muslims in Maharashtra, Late Vilasrao Deshmukh, former Chief Minister constituted a 6-member committee led by Dr. Mahmoodur Rahman, former vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, on 9th May 2008.
The committee visited Muslim majority areas particularly, Bhiwandi, Malegaon, Mumbai and Nasik to assess social, educational and economic backwardness of Muslims.
Focus of the Report was the 17 vital issues concerning Muslims in the state. Also recommend immediate action to address those issues.
Insufficient number of schools and poor conditions of existing schools were among the important issues highlighted by the committee. Stress has been given on better education of Muslims. The report recommend establishment of madrasas and more educational institutions.
The committee also recommended setting up of textile engineering technology institute in Bhiwandi and Malegaon to improve Muslims’ economic condition in the area and provide resources to upgrade the modern technological standards in power loom industries.
