Malegaon Powerloomers Go on Hunger Strike over Power Tariff Hike

Firdaus Jahan for BeyondHeadlines

Malegaon Power Consumers Association (MPCA) has announced hunger strike for unspecified time from 16 December onwards due to injustice and hike in electricity tariff to powerlooms.

Mufti Mohammed Ismail, MLA from Malegaon, told the press that disturbance in the Assembly would be created if Raane Committee Report is further delayed.

The delay in the report is causing restlessness among owners and workers, and hampering production and causing losses to the power loom centers.

Mr. Ismail said that extra power bill is injustice. Power company increased tariff by 40% for the industry, which is already going through worst times.

He also noted that many power looms were locked down but government is not paying any heed to that until now.

Mr. Ismail expressed that the State government formed a committee for many problems which is yet not submitted its report. The same should not happen with Raane Committee, he said.

He added that in a Raane Committee meeting scheduled tomorrow, they will speak with other Ministers who gave positive response on the issue.

The association made a demand at the conference for the refund of extra charges on power bills. In addition, they pressed for presentation of Raane Committee recommendations at the earliest.

Janata Dal President Mr. Buland Iqbal, who led the press meet, explained that the association decided that Aaftab Aalam would sit on an unlimited hunger strike from December 16 evening onwards.

Plans are being made to organize a movement for different problems of the industry in the near future after expensive power issue gets resolved, noted Nehal Ahmed.
