New Delhi: In wake of the gang-rape of a Danish woman recently and continuing crimes against women on the streets of Delhi, Greenpeace India on Friday reminded the Arvind Kejriwal government to implement its poll promise of improving public safety, including safety for women.

The Aam Adami Party (AAP) made a crucial poll promise for safety and security of women by “ensuring lighting and security provision on roads, parks, buses, and all public spaces”. Delhi Police’s annual review shows that rape cases have gone up from 680 in 2012, to 1559 in 2013, whereas molestation cases have gone up from 653 to 3347.

“We had hoped that the new government would work promptly to bring in a sense of security for women and citizens. However the government has been far from assuring on that front. In such unsafe times, the dearth of proper street lighting which can go a long way in preventing crimes, public spaces like parks and streets will continue to remain dark and unsafe areas for women and citizens. The government must immediately announce a roadmap to a safe Delhi,” said Pujarini Sen, campaigner, Greenpeace India.

As per Delhi Police’s mapping, 1,580 dark spots still exist in the city. The state must immediately look towards using solar energy to improve street lighting in Delhi so that the city does not go dark even during a power cut or non-payment of bills. The Rs 1,000-crore Nirbhaya fund, which has remained unutilized, can be used in addition to state funds to provide sustainable and uninterrupted street lighting in Delhi.

“The city has money, resources and expertise. It just needs the political will and we demand that the Delhi government should show that political will,” added Sen.
