Glancing through an in-your-face poll publicity (the sort of which will bombard us in coming days), I saw a familiar hideousness hidden between the benign lines, and hurriedly scribbled these lines (known but in danger once again of being forgotten) to remind my fellow Indians that our sleep of reason brings forth monsters.
सलमान खान के साथ पतंग उड़ाने के लिए
लता के साथ ‘ऐ मेरे वतन’ गाने के लिए
‘वैलेन्टाइन डे’ भारत में रोकने के लिए
हिन्दुत्व का ज़हर चुपके से पिलाने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To fly a kite with Salman Khan;
To chant a patriotic mantra with Lata;
To make illegal the Valentine’s Day in India;
And to secretly inject a deadly doze of Hindutva;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
इतिहास-भूगोल की ऐसी-तैसी करने के लिए
सिकंदर को खींचकर पटना लाने के लिए
तक्षशिला को बिहार में दिखाने के लिए
नागपूर को देश की राजधानी बनाने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To make a mess of our history and geography;
To drag the mighty Alexander down to Patna;
To prove that Takshila is in the state of Bihar;
And to make Nagpur the capital city of India;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
भारतीय इतिहास फिर से लिखवाने के लिए
वेदों में रॉकेट साइंस खोजने के लिए
साईकिल से पहले पुष्पकयान बनाने के लिए
ऐसे महाज्ञान से टेक्स-बुक रचाने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To fraudulently rewrite the Indian history;
To find rocket science in the ancient Vedas;
To invent aeroplane before making a bicycle;
And to produce textbooks with such super knowledge;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
एकलव्य का अंगूठा फिर से काटने के लिए
शंभूका का सिर फिर से कलम कराने के लिए
सीता को बेइज़्ज़त कर बनवास भेजने के लिए
इन कलंकों को देश-गौरव बनाने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To slice again the right thumb of Ekalavya;
To kill again the meditating shudra Shambuka;
To abuse and exile Sita for her alleged infidelity;
And to turn such crimes into India’s crowning glories;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
सुशासन और अनुशासन फिर से लाने के लिए
स्वयंसेवकों की फौज खड़ी करने के लिए
मदरसा-मार्क्स-मैकाले पर बैन लगाने के लिए
गुजरात के तर्ज पर रोज़ मार-काट के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To bring good governance and discipline the undisciplined;
To form a solid phalanx of well-armed volunteers;
To clamp a ban on the menace of Madrasa-Marx-Macaulay;
And to manufacture riots on the Gujarat model;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
गरीबों के बेरहम विस्थापन के लिए
धन्ना-सेठों का खुला राज लाने के लिए
उनके एक इशारे पर मर-मिटाने के लिए
भ्रष्टाटार का नंगा नाच करने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To remove mercilessly the poor and helpless;
To bring the direct rule of the millionaires;
To lay down our lives to please the plutocrats;
And to uphold and promote open corruption;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
जनता को जाहिल बनाए रखने के लिए
दलित-आदिवासियों के हिन्दूकरण के लिए
फूले-अम्बेडकर की याद मिटाने के लिए
जाति जैसा प्रपंच फिर से रचने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To keep the people in perpetual ignorance;
To completely Hinduise the dalit-adivasis;
To erase the memory of Phule-Ambedkar;
And to fortify the fabrication of caste culture;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
फासीवाद को फिर से ज़िन्दा करने के लिए
दंगा-फसाद के नए गुल खिलाने के लिए
खलनायक को महानायक बनाने के लिए
देश को एक क़ातिल के हवाले करने के लिए
मुझे वोट दो, वोट दो, इंडिया को वोट दो!
(To revive and resurrect the spirit of fascism;
To invent new ways of killing and waging wars;
To turn a repellent villain into a great hero;
And to hand over the country to a murderer;
Vote for me—Vote for India!)
