All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) emerged as the preferred party in Hyderabad when two of the influential Muslim groups have released their lists of candidates who will receive their respective support in the assembly and parliament elections due on 30 April in Telangana.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Greater Hyderabad, which released its list of candidates today, announced its support to AIMIM in five MLA seats in the city while at two other seats it is supporting Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT). JIH said it will support AIMIM at following seats: Malakpet, Charminar, Karwan, Bahadurpura and Nampally.

Dr. MKM Zafar, JIH Greater Hyderabad President, said that the Jamaat has extended its support to different candidates contesting for assembly and parliament seats on earlier occasions also. For 2014, it decided on variety of candidates depending on their and their party’s credentials in the best interests of the society and to keep the communal and fascists forces away from coming to power.

The Jamaat is supporting Welfare Party of India (WPI) candidates in Amberpet, Jubilee Hills, Khairatabad and Rajendra Nagar, while in Chandrayangutta and Yakutpura assembly seats it supports MBT.

The Telangana Muttaheda Muslim Mahaz (TMMM), a group of 29 Muslim organizations, also announced its list of preferred candidates. It is supporting AIMIM in six assembly seats in Hyderabad: Bahadurpura, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Jubilee Hills, Karwan, Malakpet, Nampally and Rajendra Nagar.

Speaking to BeyondHeadlines, TMMM member Nazimuddin Farooqui said the candidates had been shortlisted taking into consideration their secular and honest credentials. When asked if their choice would influence voters at large, he said it’s difficult to predict but the selection would influence contesting parties.

The Jamaat said it will support Indian National Congress (INC) in Goshamahal, Malkajgiri, Qutbullapur, Srilingampally, Kukatpally, Musheerabad, Sanatnagar, Secunderabad Cantt., Medchal, LB Nagar, Ibrahimpatnam and Uppal assembly seats.

Both the Jamaat and TMMM announced their support to AIMMM chief Asaduddin Owaisi for Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.
