IPS Abdur Rahman appointed Special IG, Human Rights for Maharashtra

Mumbai: Maharashtra’s senior most and well respected Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Abdur Rahman has been appointed as Special Inspector General (State Human Rights Commission), Mumbai. Abdur Rahman has also authored two well-known books which highlight the current conditions of Indian Muslims and also a highly decorated officer of the police department.  

Abdur Rahman is an IIT graduate and an (IPS) officer with over 21 years of senior leadership experience who is providing strategic, administrative and operational leadership in uniquely challenging security situations. He has been recognized as an innovative leader, inspirational and outcome focused, who delivers value by connecting the dots, he has demonstrated extensive line leadership at the cusp of security, HR and financial management.  

He has worked as ASP, Latur City (11.10.1999 to 21.05.2001)  where he handled Law and  Order effectively in the district of then Chief Minister late Vilasrao Deshmukh. Controlled criminal activity and increased detection of property-related crimes and ensured quick registration of offence at all Police Stations, then as Addl SP, Yavatmal (31.05.2001 to 22.08.2002) where he successfully controlled agrarian and communal problems effectively. He also controlled illegal passenger traffic in the district and thereby enhancing govt. revenue.  

As SP, Dhule (23.08.2002 to 22.07.2004), he brought an end to dacoities on NH-3, NH-6 and NH-211 National Highways which cross the district and the district was notorious for highway robbery and dacoity. He also planned and effectively implemented anti-dacoity operations and controlled highway robberies. 

He also implemented various measures to control city traffic and introduced many modern methods of regulating traffic. These methods were later adopted by Dhule Municipal Corporation (DMC) and widely appreciated by citizens of the district. He was SP, Chandrapur (23.07.2004 to 15.06.2005), Commandant,  State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Group IV, Nagpur (16.06.2005 to  30.07.2006), SP, Yavatmal (31.07.2006 to 16.06.2008), Principal, Police Training School, Solapur (31.07.2008 to 10.06.2010), Superintendent of Police, Govt Railway Police (GRP), Pune (16.06.2010 to 18.06.2012) and also Addl CP (Admin), Pune City (20.06.2012 to 21.05.2015).

He is a recipient of the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award of Maharashtra Government (2008) for maintaining communal harmony and effectively controlling communal riots in Yavatmal, Rajiv Gandhi Administrative Excellence Award of Maharashtra Government (2008) for creating infrastructure and bringing reforms in police administration, Peoples Forum Award in Dhule (2004) for introducing modern methods of controlling traffic in Dhule City and Special Service Medal of Director General of Police (2012) for successfully working and organizing anti-Naxal operations in districts like Chandrapur and Yavatmal. He is the author of the current bestseller “Denial and Deprivation: Indian Muslims after the Sachar Committee and Rangnath Mishra Commission Reports” published by the internationally acclaimed Routledge Publications. The book has received very good response both internationally and nationally. A number of critical reviews written by eminent intellectuals, media persons and police officers have appeared in the media regarding his new book.
