New Delhi: Newly appointed Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Najma Akhtar has had her first formal interaction with the teachers of the university at a function organised by the Jamia Teachers’ Association(JTA) on Tuesday.
During the interaction, she said that JMI over the years has made a mark among the best institutions in the country and it is being regarded with a lot of respect not only among educationists and students but also among those who are involved in framing educational policies.
She spoke highly about the talent of the teachers in JMI and said that the type of research and courses that are available here are not found in any other university in the country.
Prof. Akhtar, who took over as JMI VC earlier this month, emphasised on gender equality in the campus and said that issue is close to her heart and that she would like to have exclusive programs for women education and empowerment. She sought suggestions from the teaching fraternity in this regard. She also said there is a need to increase the enrolment of girl students in the university.
The Vice-Chancellor said that while increasing courses in skill developments are necessary, these cannot replace traditional courses whose syllabus has to be updated according to the present need.
She highlighted the need for discipline among students and said being a lady she would try to look at their issues and grievances from a mother’s point of view. At the same time, she made it clear that she will not succumb to any pressure.
About the university continuously improving its position in national and international rankings she said this was possible only because of the high quality of teaching and research work carried out in JMI.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor was welcomed by the JTA office bearers including its President, Prof. Amir Azam, Secretary, Prof. Majid Jamil, Joint Secretary M. Irfan Qureshi and other executive members of the association at the Dr M.A. Ansari Auditorium where the function was organised.
Secretary JTA Prof. Majid Jamil assured the VC of full co-operation by the teaching fraternity in taking the university to a greater height.
