World Toilet Day Observed with a Mission for Solid Liquid Waste Management

Patna: Lohia Swachh Abhiyan Bihar and Water for People celebrated ‘World Toilet Day’ as Swachhta Sankalp Divas in the Adhiveshan Bhawan, Old Secretariat Building Patna.

Honorable Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Government was the Chief Guest, Shri Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, Secretary, Department of Rural Development, CEO of Jeevika. D. Balamurgan, and Ms. Meena Narula, Country Director of the ‘Water for People’ was as the gust in the program.

Speaking on the dais, Honorable Sushil Kumar Modi said that “Bihar has become an almost open defecation-free state, we will complete all the houses which have been left. Now, further, we have to work on a war footing for solid and liquid waste management”.

On this occasion, the Honorable Deputy Chief Minister released the IEC materials developed by Water for People on behaviours of WASH. The IEC materials have been designed keeping in mind the behaviours of water and sanitation, which will be used to change the behaviour of the community on wash related practices. These materials are posters, banners, flipbooks, wall paintings, F-charts etc.

Country Director of Water for People, Ms. Meena Narula said that Water for People has been working in Bihar for the last 8 years and is developing Sheohar District as the “Everyone for Ever” model. The government has always been supportive in this and in the future, we will work jointly with the government, shoulder to shoulder and help make Bihar number-one in the index of cleanliness.

On this occasion, a unique show organized by Water For People called Multi-disciplinary show (MDS). This show was quite different from other stage and street play, used by organizations for the behaviour change of community on water sanitation and hygiene. This was a mix of multi-medium with various elements of messages and entertainment. This tool of communication is being used for behaviour change in remote villages of Bihar. This infotainment program has been proved to be a milestone in making behavioural changes in Sheohar district of Bihar.

The government officials working for WASH came from various districts, enjoyed the program a lot and praised it. They requested the Water for People that such a program should also be done in their district so that the campaign being run for cleanliness should be strengthened.
