The Indian government’s decision to provide ‘Z’ security cover to business tycoon Mukesh Ambani sparked a controversy and received criticism from different quarters of the society.
The Left parties condemn it as ‘unprecedented’ and said that the common people have been left in the lurch as gruesome incidents of rape keep happening particularly in Delhi.
“It is unprecedented that at a time when such ghastly and gruesome incidents of rape are taking place and people are demanding more security, Z-plus category of security is given to a top corporate leader like Mr. Ambani and the commoners left in the lurch,” senior CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharia told reporters in the capital.
Echoing the concern of countrymen, writer Chetan Bhagat tweeted: “Billionaires get A to Z-class security. Little girls learning A to Z, however, continue to get kicked out of police stations. What priorities.”
Welfare Party of India, AP President Malik Motasim Khan told BeyondHeadlines why the government is interested in providing Z security to Ambani, when it should be more concerned about the safety and security of aam aadmi.
Mr Khan noted that providing special security cover to Ambani is nothing but bowing down before a capitalist. He said even billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett don’t get such a security cover from their government.
While calling the latest move of the government as “arbitrary and discriminatory”, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) said it “defies all democratic traditions”.
“It strengthens the impression, that for the Central Government, some individuals are more important than ordinary citizens,” PUCL noted in a statement.
“It is also very ironical that the Central Government which has been lax and remiss to respond to requests of State Governments to urgently send CRPF and other paramilitary forces to contain sectarian sectarian violence which had killed scores of people and caused immense destruction, as in Assam last year, should respond with such great alacrity to protect a private individual.
“PUCL reiterates that the Government has a constitutional duty to ensure protection and security of all citizens, which will be affected more if the decision to provide `Z’ category security to Mukesh Ambani is not rescinded immediately.”
