J&K’s Inderwal Constituency MLA Ghulam Mohammad Saroori has asked compensation for earthquake victims in his memorandum presented to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Mr. Saroori said the land of saints and sufis, Kishtwar is the most backward district of J&K and the people there are unable to re-build their damaged houses. He requested Dr. Singh to announce and sanction a special package for the district. He demanded Rs. 4 lakh for each of those houses that were damaged completely and Rs. 2 lakh for 50% damaged houses.

School building under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) sustained 90% damages in the recent earthquakes and all such schools were declared unsafe. Mr. Saroori demanded financial assistance for these schools.

On their visit to Kishtwar, PM Dr. Singh and Sonia Gandhi laid foundation stone of 850MW Rattle Power project, located in Inderwal Constituency. They also announced special package of Rs. 710 crore for construction of roads under PMGSY.

While noting that no other project were taken up after the completion of Dul Hasti Hydro Electric project, Mr. Saroori reminded PM of the district’s rich potential of producing nearly 20,000MW electricity.

He also stated that a few of the sanctioned projects such as Burser, Karthai, Keru, Kwar, Pakuldul and Rattle were not started due to various reasons. Despite completion of formalities and allotment of some projects, work is yet to start, reminded Mr. Saroori.
