The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal has picked up activist Jayeeta Das from Kolkata’s Charu market area on Friday by flouting every norms, says civil rights group.

Release Jayeeta Das Unconditional, CRPP DemandsOn the same day, the STF raided and ransacked her house without warrant and intimidated her family members, who came to know about Jayeeta’s arrest only through media. The STF also reportedly forced the family to sign on blank papers.

Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) has stated that the right to see warrant and intimation to the family about the arrest are fundamental rights, which were denied in Jayeeta’s case.

“These norms and procedures are crucial for the detained/arrested as well as her kith and kin as the only way to safeguard oneself from torture, mistreatment let alone to much needed and timely access to a lawyer of her choice,” noted CRPP.

The civil rights group stated that these kinds of acts of impunity had been by the intelligence agencies in the past.

“A cursory look into the conduct of STF and similar intelligence agencies in West Bengal and elsewhere in the subcontinent proves beyond doubt the utter disdain for norms and procedures by these agencies,” CRPP added.

While strongly condemning the unlawful arrest of Jayeeta Das by the STF of West Bengal, CRPP has demanded her unconditional release.

“We demand that pending her release she be given access to the lawyer of her choice and be produced at the earliest before the court.”
