New Delhi: On 2nd January 2019 afternoon, authorities of Delhi, along with Delhi Police rushed in with a contingent of police forces and 2 water cannon vehicles, forcing people out of slums near Zakir Nagar alongside the bank of Yamuna river.

People strongly protested against the corporation but they demolished approximately 450 slum houses leaving 450 families homeless. Some people also got arrested but later they were released.

The residents of this area are complaining that no prior notice was served, instead just an announcement was made the night before the demolition to vacate the slums took place. The locals complain that they did not get the time to take their belongings out of their houses.

An old man, the resident of a slum said that the authorities stated Supreme Court order to vacate the land and police forced people out of the houses and began the demolition.

“We have been living here for last 15 years and have nowhere to go. Our identity cards were made of Delhi in 2008” he said.

“Our houses were burnt in an electric fire in the last year winters and the government provided us compensation for the loss, if they had to remove us, they (authorities) should have asked us to go away then only” added an old woman of the slum.

Other local said that they were not informed about this eviction and it was sudden which left them with no alternative plans.

As of now, affected people are left shelterless in this chilling weather and more people are preparing for the consequences of this forceful eviction and demolition that is to be continued till 5th January. Further demolition will leave more people homeless.
