New Delhi: Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Prof. Najma Akhtar has been felicitated at a public reception for being a distinguished educationist, administrator and first-ever woman Vice-Chancellor of a Central University in India.

The function was organized by Rex Remedies Charitable Trust at India Islamic Cultural Centre,Lodhi Road,New Delhi and was attended by Padma Shri Prof. Akhtarul Wasey, President, Maulana Azad University, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Mr. A.P. Siddiqui (IPS), Registrar, JMI, Mr. Sirajuddin Qureshi, President, India Islamic Cultural Centre and other distinguished guests, teachers, officers of JMI and general public.

Padmashree Prof. Akhtarul appreciated the vision and efforts of Prof. Najma Akhtar to increase the number of girl students in the university. He said we fully support her vision and mission and ready to contribute in it through all means.

Prof. Najma Akhtar thanked the organizers, dignitaries on the dais and the people present in the auditorium for felicitating her. She informed the audience about the steps she has taken in the last three months to improve the academic atmosphere in the university.

Prof. Akhtar informed them that more women teachers have been given administrative responsibilities and with her becoming the Vice-Chancellor there is a feeling among the women teachers and students in the university that they can also reach the top post. She said before raising the enrolment of girl students in the university she is trying to increase the hostel facility for them as it gives a sense of security to them and their parents and motivates them for higher education.

Prof. Akhtar sought help from everyone in realising the university’s dream of starting a medical college-cum-hospital. 

She also informed that the university has revised the syllabus as per the latest requirements and some new departments will be opened soon.
