Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today announced an aid of Rs 25,000 for each victim family of the deadly fire that made around 2000 slum dwellers of Mumbai homeless on Friday.

“I sympathise with 1,300 families who lost their houses in the fire. The victims would get Rs 25,000 per family from the chief minister’s fund, over and above the help announced by the state government,” Chavan told reporters in the city after visiting the site.

A committee under chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad would be set up to ensure that proper compensation is given to the victims, he said.

The blaze injured 21 people and ravaged scores of homes in the Garib Nagar slum, near Mumbai’s Bandra Railway Station, though no one was killed.

The home of one of the leading child stars in the film Slumdog Millionaire, which highlighted the plight of India’s poor, was gutted.
