Patna: After denying, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has finally announced yesterday the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the brutal murder of a doctor by the jail inmates in the premises of Gopalganj jail last week. The government has also recommended a judicial inquiry into the Forbesganj police firing incident, which led to the killing of four persons on June 3.

“On the basis of the report submitted by the home secretary, the Government initiated some action and there will be more such actions in days to come. But we felt that there was a case for a probe by the premier investigation agency. Before the doctor was beaten to death, he may have had expressed fears to his family members,” the chief minister said here on Monday.

Dr Buddhadev Singh , the youngest brother of an ex-MP Satyadeo Singh, was beaten to death by inmates inside the jail premises on May 30, triggering widespread condemnation. The chief minister immediately dispatched the home secretary to Gopalganj for conducting a spot enquiry into the incident. On the basis of the enquiry report of the home secretary, the state Government gave marching orders to the Gopalganj DM and the IG (Prison). The Gopalganj SP was also served show cause notice by the Government which even suspended some of the jail officials.

The National Human Rights Commission also issued notice to the state chief secretary to submit a report on the shocking incident within two weeks. On the Forbesganj police firing incident, the chief minister said a judicial probe will be recommended and a proposal to this effect will be okayed by the state Cabinet on Tuesday. “Subsequently, the state Government will urge the chief justice of the Patna High Court for an enquiry by a judge,” said Nitish Kumar.
