New Delhi: Legendary artist Maqbool Fida Husain (M F Hussain) passed away early this morning at Royal Brompton Hospital in London, Hindustan Times reported citing reports from the United Kindom. The report said that he died of heart attack at the age of 95.
The noted artist, who was awarded with Padma Vibhushan in 1991, was in indifferent health for the last month-and-a-half. His burial rituals would be conducted in London and not in India, Indo Asian News Agency has said quoted its sources.
His sons and daughter were with him when he died.
Born on September 17, 1915, at Pandharpur, an important pilgrimage city in Solapur District, Maharashtra, Husain left India in 2006 and stayed at Qatar and the United Kingdom, among other places after a series of legal cases and death threats over paintings that showed nude Hindu goddesses. Since then, right-wing Hindu groups have vandalized exhibitions that include his work. Hussain got the citizenship of Qatar in 2010.
One of India’s greatest masters on the world art stage, Husain’s paintings regularly fetched over $1 million at auctions around the world. He also directed a few films. One featured Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit, ho he often described as his muse.
Husain was in self-imposed exile since 2006 after Hindu groups threatened him for his paintings of Hindu deities.
