New Delhi: Bollywood mourns the sudden demise of renowned Indian painter Maqbool Fida Hussain (M F Hussain), who passed away in London yesterday at the age of 95. Hussain who started out painting billboards for films, had a deep connection with Indian film industry all through his career as a painter. The industry remembers the spirited person and artist that he was.
Amitabh Bachchan was among the first ones to express his grief.
Madhuri Dixit, Hussian’s muse who also acted in his first film venture Gajgamini, too was very grieved. She told PTI, “It’s a very sad day for me today.” On his forced exile she added, “I think something should have been done in an organised way…But it didn’t happen.” She said she was certain he missed India, “I am sure that he did miss the country…I feel sad that he was born in India but couldn’t breathe his last here.”
“MF Hussain, artist, painter, friend … passes away ! Sad, very sad! Many of his works and gifts adorn my home….Hussain’s best painting gift to me..a Hanuman with ‘jadi buti’ flying… given to me in Breach Candy Hospital, during Coolie episode. Another special painting he did for me… translated my poem I wrote in Hospital, on canvas… very special and most endearing!!” Bachchan wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Celina Jaitley wrote on her Twitter page: “My God what a tragic loss….Hussein saab is no more….I met him last in Dubai at the emirates towers some months ago…just cannot believe it.
Rahul Bose did raise the point that Hussain had to live the last years of his life in exile. He tweeted: “Hussain passes away…we hang our heads partly in grief and partly in shame for not being able to let him spend his last days in this country.”
Neha Dhupia hailed Hussain as a genius. She wrote: “The end of yet another genius, MF Hussain RIP.”
