New Delhi: Management students at the central university of Jamia Millia Islamia has written to the Director of the Management Centre alleging ‘communal remarks’ made by a senior Professor in class and use of ‘unparliamentary language.’

Students of the first year MBA course alleged that Professor Prahalad K. Basu, who is also serving as the Vice-chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Centre of Management Studies at the university allegedly mocked the “Muslim names” and made communal remarks in class.

He allegedly said in class, ‘this is a third class minority university…you are idiots…u all are all illiterate…why am I wasting my time here…’

The written complaint, a copy of which is available to BeyondHeadlines, accuses the professor of “complete lack of professionalism” although “being extremely experienced both in terms of teaching and practice.”

The incident happened on September 7, the day a suitcase bomb wrecked up the Delhi High Court. Students have termed his behavior has signs of “Islamophobia.”

He apparently even made fun of a girl who was veiled saying, you ‘black head’ with no intelligence.

BH spoke to many students (both Muslim and Non-Muslims) and they all confirmed to the teacher having made “communal remarks” but they did not want to be named.  They termed his comments “undemocratic” and against the spirit of secularism.

Students have requested the Director of the centre to initiate “necessary disciplinary action” against him.

When BeyondHeadlines called Prof U.M. Amin, Honorary Director he said, “The matter has been resolved. Please let it rest here.”

On asked if he received any written complaint from students, Amin added, “I would not like to make any comment on that.”

Prof. Basu is currently also the Chairman of the Strategic Management Group of India. In past he has also served at NALCO, BRPSE, World Bank and was part of several empowered committees.

Prof. Basu has many fans among his students though. His Facebook Page has many Teachers’ Day messages from his former and current students. While Chandan has written that he is “l very privileged to have teacher” like him, Taufique wish him by reminding him, “Thanks for making us what we are today.”
