Ramdev to Declare Assets Today, Defends Call to Form Armed Group

    BeyondHeadlines Special Correspondent

Haridwar (Uttrakhand): Baba Ramdev will give the details of his assets this evening to counter allegations that he has illegal wealth. He has also defended his yesterday’s announcement to form armed groups of youths.

He had said yesterday that he would build and train an army of 11,000 men and women to fight corruption and had warned the government that the next time there was police action at a protest, his supporters would be armed and would retaliate. He did not climb down completely on Thursday, but was on the defensive when he said he was not “training terrorists or Maoists, but nationalists.”

“The words should be used in the right context…. I said I will make a force who will not beat anyone, but they will not get beaten either,” the yoga guru said, adding, “what is the harm or wrong if I speak about shaurya (valour)?”

Ramdev’s provocative comment in Haridwar yesterday caused a political storm in nearby Delhi. He had said: “Twenty youth from each region will come forward for our fight against corruption. They must be dedicated, ready to make the ultimate sacrifice. They will be given arms training. Next time at Ramlila it will be Ravanlila. Let’s see who gets beaten up.”

The government made its stand clear. “It is anti-national and we have to take action,” warned V Narayanswamy, minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). An hour later, the Home Minister weighed in. “I’ve seen Ramdev’s statement. By making that statement he’s exposed his true colours and intention. Let him do so and the law will deal with that,” P Chidambaram said.

Later on Wednesday evening, a statement issued by his spokesperson SK Tijarawala said that the Baba did not mean training in the use of guns or bombs and that the intention was not to take law in their hands.

The government has been caught in a face-off with the yoga icon since the weekend, when it ordered the police to dismantle a massive camp that the Baba had organised – it combined yoga with a sit-in against corruption. On Saturday, the Baba launched an indefinite hunger strike. Hours later, the police moved in and arrested him. The 65,000 people gathered at Ramlila Maidan were teargassed and lathi-charged.

The incident brought together activists and opposition parties who condemned the government for breaking up a peaceful demonstration.

  • An Open Letter for the Flag Bearers of Anti-Corruption Movement

An Open Letter for the Flag Bearers of Anti-Corruption Movement

    Afroz Alam Sahil, BeyondHeadlines

The nation-wide movement against corruption and black money seems to have woken up the common masses from their deep slumber. Corruption has deeply entrenched the Indian nation as evident in the recent scams of 2G Spectrum, Commonwealth Games and the Adarsh Housing Society.

This was the reason why people have been agitated enough to come out and participate along with the fasting of Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev. Common citizens joined the civil society’s movement against corruption. Such a wide scale mobilization reminds the JP movement of the late 1970s, which nonetheless later impacted the secular fabric of the nation by giving birth to a divisive and radical Hindutva movement. This must serve as a reminder whether the current movement has anything hidden to give birth at a later stage.

Some of the key actors who are involved in this movement have dubious pasts. Whether it is the Anna or especially the Baba, they cannot avoid the questions related to their team members and their real intention behind supporting the movement.  There is an urgent need to ask a few questions to understand their stand point and motives.

What is corruption for Mr. Anna Hazare? Is it just financial irregularities? Mr. Hazare has been a social activist raising many issues and leading many a movements. But what baffles many is that, he has never raised his voice against the communal riots in the country. His native state Maharashtra has seen many such riots where Hindutva forces, most often with the support of the administration, have attacked the Muslim community with impunity. Riots like that of the Gujarat Riots, Meerut riots, Aligarh riots, Bhagalpur riots, Sohrabuddin encounter and the recent Batla house fake encounters are just a few cases that come to  mind when we think of communalism of one strand (of the Hindutva type) or the other (of the State communalism through police etc).  These events ironically have not been enough to stir Mr. Hazare’s soul!  Hazare has hardly ever spoken against the likes of Raj Thackerey or Ram Madhav.

If we just confine corruption to the aspect of misuse of public money then there is very little doubt on Anna’s honesty. But if Anna despite being honest allows him to be used by the dishonest and the communal forces, then this is set to take a dangerous turn. I believe Anna is not unaware of these elements in his team.

Baba Ramdev has been another charismatic character with a large following but has dubious credentials as far as financial honesty is concerned.  He has donated money to the BJP. The Ramlila Maidan fasting along with Babri Masjid demolition accused Sadhvi Rithambara who shared the centre stage only made it amply clear that the Baba has been working as an RSS agent.  Other questions related to Baba’s past have resurfaced now. There have been questions on the source of his income and on the financial irregularities at Patanjali Yog Peeth, Hardwar. He has been alleged to have a hand in the disappearance or the killing of his own Spiritual Guru Shankar Dev and the Baba is also alleged to have kidnapped and threatened the head of the Aastha TV Channel. In addition, the death of Mr. Rajiv Dixit, the secretary of Baba’s own Swabhiman Trust has made people ask uncomfortable questions on Baba’s role.

Another important flag bearer of this movement has been Mr. Arvind Kejriwal. I have heard very interesting tales on him. He is the same person who got international recognition of Ramon Magsaysay Award for his work in Sundar Nagari of Delhi. Mr.Kejriwal has reached many heights and unfortunately Sundar Nagari remains what it was. Sundar Nagari which has large chunk Muslim population do not even know Mr. Kejriwal, let alone his work. Arvind also helped in opening the Call centres in Bihar which in turn helped the image of Nitish Kumar. Arvind is well aware what has happened to the call centre. Mr Kejriwal these days does not like to attend the small RTI seminars. In fact he has no time to do such things as he is busy awarding people for RTI. Why does he need to be free from these awards as through these he gets the donations from the likes of the Infosys and the TATA.

It becomes incumbent on us not only to expand the definition and scope of corruption but also to understand and know the past of some of these key figures of the anti-corruption movement.

Defence Minister Antony Says Country Going Through “Transparency Revolution”

    BeyondHeadlines  News Desk

New Delhi: Defence Minister A.K. Antony today said that the country was going through a “transparency revolution,” which could not be stopped “midway.” He made the statement against the backdrop of agitations demanding more openness and accountability in the government functioning.

    File photo of AK Antony

India’s premier news agency PTI has quoted him as saying: “Country is passing through a new era revolution — the transparency revolution. The walls of secrecy are crumbling in every field gradually including politics, business, administration and judiciary. Once the trend has started, you can’t stop it midway.”

The defence minister was talking to reporters after inaugurating a new conference hall of the Press Club of India.

Civil Society members such as Anna Hazare have been demanding greater checks and balances on the functioning on the government by having institutions such as the Lokpal and are holding agitations on the issue.

Antony said the transition was facing “problems” as “India is not ready as Indian politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, armed forces and all those who are holding key position are not ready for this transition that is why there are problems in this transition.”

“But that is also part of Indian democracy. But after few years they will. The transition will go on,” he said.

Crediting Parliament for increasing transparency in the country, Antony said, “For that (transparency), you have to give credit to Indian media, NGOs and social activists but ultimately it was the Indian Parliament through the Right to Information (RTI) Act.”

The minister said the RTI ACT, passed by Parliament in 2005, would help the transparency revolution percolate to all walks of life, organisations and ultimately all families.

“Instead of going back, I think in the years to come, the RTI Act will spread to new areas. I think every facet of human life will be transparent. This is happening in India under the law,” he said.

Lauding the role of Indian media in building the nation, Mr. Antony said the society is getting industrialised and there is a clash of interest between various groups.

“In this environment, you should n0t allow anybody to use you… The media should not allow itself to be manipulated by vested interests and groups,” he added.

  • Local Congress leader Resigns in Ramdev’s Support

Etah (UP): Some Congress cadres, it appears, are not happy with the crackdown on Swami Ramdev and his entourage at the Ramlila Ground.

A local Congress leader in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh has resigned from the district Congress Committee to protest against the crackdown by the Delhi Police.

Pramila Vashishtha, vice-president of the Etah district Congress committee resigned to protest alleged brutality of the police. In her resignation letter, she condemned the crackdown and extened full support to Swami Ramdev and tirade against corruption.

  • Ram Movement Redux in Anti-Corruption Crusade

Ram Movement Redux in Anti-Corruption Crusade

    The rightwing revolution is here.

    Sagarika Ghose

The UPA has dispatched Ramdev to his ashram. The police action at Ram Lila Maidan was insupportable and the BJP has now gained a cause celebre. RSS and VHP have stood in full support of Ramdev from the start. Sangh parivar activists on Twitter are dubbing anyone critical of the Ramdev as a “Congress agent.”

The Ramdev phenomenon and to some extent the Anna campaign are part of a new revolution. This is India’s rightwing nationalist revolution. It is rightwing because it is based on national pride and individual entitlement; it is a movement of the middle and lower middle class buoyed up by 9 per cent growth which now seeks a responsive, overtly honest government and a hard state.

This rightwing revolution is closely linked to a Hindu consolidation spreading through society. Perhaps as a backlash to globalization, urban religiosity and bharatiya sankriti are fashionable; faith in gurus is growing and cuts across class. Ramdev jumps from colas to homosexuality to black money in his choice of enemies, yet his devotees’ faith remains constant.

Notwithstanding the BJP’s crushing electoral defeats, culturally Hindu nationalist consolidation is gathering tremendous momentum, much of which feeds into the anti-corruption campaigns. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement, in a new urbane sophisticated avatar, is back.

It’s a revolution with virtues and dangers. Its virtues are, first, that it is based on an engaged sense of ‘desi’ cultural pride. Second, its forcing a debate where none existed on issues like corruption and black money. Black money is being generated in our economy every day and the government has failed to curb it. But the danger of the Hindu revolution is that it may overthrow constitutional liberal values and revive street justice, of which Ramdev’s prescription of death penalty for economic offences is one example and shoe throwing is another.

It is also a revolution that is being played outside formal politics, at least for now. Govindacharya, one of the organizers of Ramdev’s movement, has been openly critical of the BJP leadership. Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj are fighting a battle in parliament, not at the Ram Lila Maidan. But just as the Ram Mandir agitation was first begun by the VHP and later used by the BJP to come to power, there are those within the Sangh who are eyeing a similar opportunity to piggyback on an anti-corruption movement being built at the grassroots by Hindu outfits. North Indian elections next year in UP, Punjab and Uttarakhand will be a test of whether the BJP can convert Hindu consolidation into electoral victory.

”War against corruption’ is led by people of many hues, but it is also the Hindu revolution’s catch-all device to rally new support to the cause.

Many protests are contained within the ‘anti-corruption’ umbrella. These are: protest against an overly westernized ‘elite class’, protest against ‘anti-national intellectuals’ embodied in the persona of Binayak Sen, and protest, at its very root, at rule by the ‘foreign-born’ Sonia Gandhi. It is no surprise therefore that Ramdev brought up Sonia’s foreign-ness again.

Hatred of ‘foreign’ Sonia Gandhi and the Congress dynasty is the leitmotif and spur of the Hindu revolution. Its the reason why large numbers of middle class folk are lining up behind the Hindu revolution.

Analysts have pointed to rightwing consolidation in the lower judiciary gauged from the judgements on the Babri Masjid title suit as well as from judgements on Binayak Sen, both criticised by the apex court. The saffron thinktank Vivekananda Foundation consists of many public figures. Already the BJP is asking why Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s seminar did not get the same treatment as Ramdev. A court in Muzaffarpur has registered a case of ‘sedition’ against Digvijay Singh for his views on the yoga guru.

The first Hindu revolution was begun in the 1980s by the VHP, based on a desire to restore Hindu pride by building a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. ‘Hindu rage’ at the ‘minority appeasement’ of the Rajiv Gandhi government in the Shah Bano case added to the momentum. The movement acquired a mass character through LK Advani’s rath yatras. ‘Pseudo secularists’ ‘Macaulay’s children’ were the words coined against critics at that time.

Today Bajrang Dal and VHP activists are angry with the BJP for letting the temple movement down, for straying towards the path of ‘Shining India’. The electoral defeats of 2004 and 2009 shocked the sangh. The consequence was a desperate search for a cause, a new rallying cry. Now the ‘war on corruption’ has taken the place of ‘Hindu pride’ and the ‘pseudo secularist’ has been replaced by the 2011 term ‘corrupt’.

Those like Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal may be genuinely driven by nation-building sentiments. Yet their voices are in danger of being drowned by those with more supporters on the street.

Will the Hindu rightwing revolution spell the death-knell of the UPA?

Rajiv Gandhi created his party’s nemesis by allowing the shilanyas at Ayodhya in 1989. Manmohan Singh too could prove unequal to rightwing consolidation. Already the UPA’s handling of Ramdev was pathetic. First kow-towing and next arresting him at midnight, showed how politically weak this government is.

India’s Hindu consolidation today has a benign face focused on forcing governments to deliver on corruption. But the Hindu revolution could start to devour liberal values if met with governmental paralysis. “Hang the corrupt’ or ‘jail anti-nationals’ or ‘bomb Pakistan” can’t become mantras of a modern rational India. UPA 2 needs to recognize the society it is confronting, start delivering on its anti-corruption campaign promises and look and act like a 24 x 7 government. Else, bit by bit its authority is being chipped away.

Today, its Ramdev and Anna. For tomorrow, who knows which new peoples messiah is waiting in the wings.

  • Ramdev’s Fast Enters 6th Day; Health Starts Deteriorating

    BeyondHeadlines Special Correspondent

Haridwar (Uttarakhand): The hunger strike of yoga guru Baba Ramdev has entered its sixth day resulting in the deterioration of his health. Doctors attending him have advised liquid intake and requested him to end his fast soon. The yoga guru has been on fast to press for his demand for bringing bringing back black money from foreign countries, making tougher anti-graft laws and completely uprooting corruption from the country.

During a media briefing today at the holy city of Haridwar in Indian state of Uttarakhand, Chief Medical Officer Dr Yogesh Sharma said: “His health is deteriorating. He has lost weight and is suffering from dehydration. He has been kept on regular medical examinations.”

The doctor said that they had requested Ramdev to take liquid in the form of juices or milk.  “It will be better if he ends his fast,” Sharma said.

The yoga guru, along with hundreds of his disciples, is observing a fast from June 4 at Patanjali Yogapeeth, around 20 kms from here, to press for his demands of bringing back black money from foreign nations, tougher anti-graft laws and to uproot corruption from the country.

Earlier in the day, Ramdev did not show any sign of relentlessness and said that his fast will continue till Centre accepts all his demands.

Scores of Ramdev supporters are also participating in a day-long fast being observed by social activist Anna Hazare demanding a strong anti-corruption Lokpal bill in New Delhi today.

New Delhi: People have started gathering in large number today at Rajghat to participate in the day-long hunger strike called by Anna Hazare to protest against police crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his supporters on late Saturday night.

A number of youths wearing Gandhi caps and elderly people were seen at the spot waving the tricolour amidst a heavy posse of security personnel. A man dressed like Mahatma Gandhi was the centre of attraction as he sang Gandhi’s favourite bhajan ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.’

After paying floral tributes at Mahatma Gandhi’s samadhi, the Gandhian leader reached the protest site at around 10.20 am to a thunderous applause from around a thousand supporters who assembled there amid a large police presence.

Hazare chanted “Vande Mataram,” “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Inqilab Zindabad,” prompting the crowd to echo him. Civil society activists like Shanti Bhushan, Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh and Arvind Kejriwal joined the protest.

With the Delhi Police refusing permission for the day-long hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Hazare had decided to shift the venue to Rajghat to avoid a confrontation.

Civil rights activists had contended that denial of permission to hold peaceful protest was against the basic Constitutional rights of citizens.

The Hazare-led protest will be accompanied by an all-religion prayer meeting and a debate on Lokpal Bill.

Addressing the gathering former IPS Kiran Bedi termed the protest “second war of independence against corruption, extortion and bribery.”

“I called Anna ‘Gandhi’ yesterday. It made some people very angry but large number of the people very happy. Why we have to sit here today? We did not raise our voices against corruption earlier so we landed up here. We are not against politicians. We approached them, but they did not take up the struggle, so Anna had to take up the fight,” she said.

Earlier, before the protest started, Hazare said that the government was trying to “scare” people off the protest. The organisers claimed action on Ramdev supporters had created a “fear psychosis” among the people.

Earlier in the morning, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal said: “It is an assertion of our fundamental rights to assemble peacefully and protest. We will do it and we are ready to face the consequences. In a democracy, it is extremely important that whenever there is injustice, people should protest,” he said.

He said everyone is angry about the “kind of atrocities” committed on Saturday night on the supporters of Baba Ramdev. “It was almost an assault on democracy.”

New Delhi: Angry with the police action on his camp at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground on late Saturday night, Baba Ramdev has warned the central government this morning that he would stage armed protest at same venue next time and that his followers would be ready to retaliate, NDTV reported.

“Next time at Ramlila, it will be Ravanlila. Let’s see who gets beaten up,” the yoga guru threatened the government in clear terms.

Baba Ramdev detailed the arms training plan: “Twenty youth from each region will come forward for the fight against corruption. These young people should be 35-40 years old. Not only men, young women must also join them. They must be dedicated, ready to make the ultimate sacrifice. They will be given arms training. We will build an army of 11,000 men and women.”

After his eviction from Delhi and his return to the ashram in Haridwar, Baba Ramdev had announced that he was resuming his indefinite hunger-strike against black money and corruption. He has been constantly making statements about his plans to take his crusade forward from his headquarters and on Tuesday, he struck a more benign note when he said he “forgave” the Prime Minister and his government at a personal level.

“I forgive the PM and government for atrocities and wrongs done to me…but for destroying democracy, the nation will have to decide,” he said. And with the latter political statement, he also added that he was once again “open to talking to the government, if they approach us.”

On Saturday, Baba Ramdev had begun a hunger-strike at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The Delhi Police, stating that he had permission only to hold a yoga camp with 5,000 in attendance and not a protest with over 50,000 people, had dismantled the camp, where 65,000 people had gathered before they were lathicharged and tear gassed.

The Baba himself was evicted and then flown back to his headquarters in Hardwar on the government’s orders.

In Delhi on Monday, the Supreme Court asked the government to explain its action – at a characteristically lengthy speech in Uttarakhand, the Baba said he was grateful for the court’s intervention.

He also said that he rejected the Delhi Police’s version of events. “The Delhi Police is lying. They beat up people. They said that people were injured in a stampede. None of our workers provoked violence.” He also said that “the Mahatma would be crying” about the government’s treatment of the women and children who he claims were attacked on Saturday night.

The government has banned the Baba from entering Delhi for the next 15 days. While the yoga teacher is accustomed to whipping up crowds that run into thousands, he now faces the unique problem of where to set up a new base camp for his “satyagraha against corruption.”  He was hoping to bring his movement to Noida in Uttar Pradesh, but Chief Minister Mayawati has rejected that proposal on the grounds that it could lead to a law and order problem.

Hazare had announced to undertake the day-long hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. However, with Delhi Police refusing permission, Hazare decided to shift the venue to Rajghat to avoid a confrontation.

  • Baba Ramdev’s Background Needs To Be Probed: Digvijay Singh

    BeyondHeadlines News Desk

New Delhi: launching a fresh round of attack against yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Congress General Secretary Dignvijay Singh today said that Baba Ramdev’s background needed to be probed.
He also condemned the comparison of Ramlila crackdown to Jallianwali Baug. He said that Ramdev and Mayawati were two faces of the same coin.
The Congress party will not form an alliance with the BSP or SP in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
