    Shiv Bhakts Make Mahashivratri Night of Horror for Muslims Across India!

    Festivals are meant to bring joy into people’s lives, especially those rooted in faith and religion. They are intended to promote peace, harmony, and love. However, in recent times, many festivals in India have taken on a more divisive tone. Hindutva-driven narratives have increasingly weaponized these festivals, turning them into platforms for political and religious agendas.

    Take Mahashivratri, a significant Hindu festival celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm across India. It symbolizes the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is also a time for self-purification and spiritual awakening. Devotees fast and stay awake throughout the night. Yet, even this revered festival has not been spared from communal influences. Attempts to incite tensions have been reported in several states, particularly in Bihar, where elections are on the horizon.

    In one city, a controversial Shivratri tableau was paraded, clearly aimed at inciting hostility towards Muslims. The Shivratri tableau used the ‘love jihad’, a propaganda term spread by Hindu extremists, claiming that Muslim men have a hidden agenda to lure Hindu women into marriage and then force them to convert to Islam. This baseless rhetoric was part of a broader attempt to provoke communal tensions.

    While many Muslim communities have managed to resist such attempts at division, the situation has become particularly volatile in places like Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, where tensions escalated despite efforts to maintain peace. Additionally, the atmosphere has been further tainted by attempts to disrupt social harmony over food-related issues, as the weaponization of identity politics reaches into every aspect of public life.

    Here, I have attempted to document some of the hateful incidents that have happened across the country on the occasion of Mahashivratri. These are just a few cases that have gained attention on social media or have been reported by various news websites.

    — Agra (Uttar Pradesh): Hindu Mahasabha district president Meera Rathod offered prayers at the Taj Mahal on Maha Shivratri, carrying a Shivling and Gangajal from the Kumbh Mela for the ritual. She claimed that the Taj Mahal is actually a Hindu temple called Tejo Mahalaya and that she was purifying it.

    — Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh): An attempt was made to inflame tensions in the area by framing the clash between two groups in the Gwalthai industrial area as a religious issue on social media, claiming it was sparked by a dispute over the Mahashivratri feast. However, the police have clarified that it was simply a fight between two parties, with no religious motive involved.

    — Hazaribagh (Jharkhand): Communal violence erupted in Hazaribagh district over the decorations and installation of loudspeakers for Mahashivratri. The situation escalated to the point where both sides engaged in stone pelting, and several shops and vehicles—including four motorcycles, an auto, and a car—were set on fire.

    — Indora, Kangra (Himachal Pradesh): A Hindu nationalist mob harassed a vendor outside the Kathgarh temple during the Shivratri Mahotsav for cooking chicken on February 24.

    — Jama Masjid (Delhi): On Mahashivratri, a procession was held in the Old Delhi area, which passed in front of the Shahi Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid. During the procession, laser lights were used to project the symbol of “Om” onto the dome of the mosque. To prevent tensions from escalating, the Shahi Imam himself stepped in to defuse the situation and ensure the atmosphere remained peaceful.

    — Munger (Bihar): Bajrang Dal organised a Maha Shivratri procession that prominently featured a Shivratri tableau portraying the conspiracy theory of ‘love jihad.’ It included a refrigerator and a mutilated mannequin symbolising the dismembered body parts of a woman.

    — Nalanda (Bihar): A Shiv Baraat tableau was taken out on the occasion of Mahashivratri. It is alleged that the procession was attacked by anti-social elements, resulting in one person being injured and several others suffering injuries. The police have taken ten individuals from both sides into custody and are questioning them about the incident. Residents claim that the violence stemmed from a dispute between two groups involved in the procession. 

    — New Delhi (Delhi): ABVP members assaulted students, including the mess committee secretary, at the South Asian University (SAU) canteen for refusing to comply with their demand to ban non-vegetarian food during Shivratri.

    — Rohtak (Haryana): BJP leader Naveen Dhull led a mob in attacking a Biryani shop vendor and forced him to shut down the shop, citing Maha Shivratri.

    — Samastipur (Bihar): Hindu nationalists, led by Dipanshu Sinha, harassed a Muslim meat shop owner and forcibly shut down his store, claiming they would not allow it to remain open near a temple during Shivratri, calling it a “sinful act.”

    — Sitamarhi (Bihar): Tension gripped Parmanandpur village on the night of Mahashivratri after unidentified miscreants vandalized idols of Lord Shiva. In response, hundreds of residents gathered to protest, blocking roads, burning tires, and demanding swift action against the culprits. Some villagers have expressed suspicions that individuals from a particular community may be responsible for the act. However, the police have stated that no evidence has been found so far to support this claim. 

    It is also important to note that in recent years, there have been several incidents in which idol desecration was allegedly linked to individuals from Hindu organizations, with the motive being to tarnish the reputation of Muslims and target them.

    Amid these developments, there are also reports of Hindu and Muslim devotees coming together to pray in their own ways at the revered Bhanguri Baba’s Thana, a centuries-old temple in Rangmahal, North Guwahati, Assam. While some perform puja, others recite duas in devotion, showcasing a shared respect for the sacred space.

    The temple, believed to be over 500 years old, is cared for by Muslim custodian Motibar Rahman, whose family has protected its rituals for generations. Despite being over 90 years old, Rahman has diligently preserved the traditions of the temple, personally overseeing the arrangements for Mahashivratri each year. Under his care, the temple stands as a powerful symbol of inter-religious harmony.

    Adah Sharma, who made a transforming journey from casting couch to saffron couch, rise to more infamy with the malicious and disreputed propaganda film Kerala Story is nursing political ambitions after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s sees hope to make a foray into Kerala. It may be recalled that the BJP made an unsuccessful bid to win over the Christian clergy through its rabble-rouser Narendra Modi failed miserably last month.

    It is significant to note that a massive controversy erupted around the film after the Kerala Story’s trailer claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS. The figure was revised from 32,000 women to only 3 (three) women after the backlash about the false figures and the maligning propaganda to spoil the most literate state Kerala’s good name. Adah Sharma has maligned Muslim women from Kerala without any hesitation. It may be recalled that Adah Sharma was trolled by Bappi Lahiri’s fans when she wore jewels on her exposed body and asked people to compare herself and Bappi Lahiri on who looks better!

    The Kerala Story is set to be released in 37 countries and it is an open secret that there will be no inquiry into the profits generated overseas and the possibility of money laundering for the 2024 elections. The propaganda machinery aims to mint money by maligning the Muslim community and bolster the sagging political fortunes of Narendra Modi. For his part, Narendra Modi was busy promoting the Kerala Story and completely avoided questions on the ‘40 percent commission government in Karnataka’, inflation, price rise, unemployment, and other issues. During his speeches, Modi was unable to mention Karnataka. All the while, he was saying – Kerala, Kerala, Kerala. Those watching him from close quarters during campaigning disclosed that PM Modi seems to be impressed with Adah Sharma’s ‘good looks’ and her political utility scale to the BJP prospects in 2024.

    Informed sources say that the BJP is mulling the possibility of fielding Adah Sharma from the Palakkad Lok Sabha constituency in the next elections as they think that the Palakkad Iyer Adah Sharma may help the BJP get an opening in Kerala. Last time, the BJP’s political Metro crashed as the now 90-year-old Metro man Sreedharan failed to deliver!

    The BJP seems to be clutching on the last straw -Adah Sharma. The problem is that the BJP does not get back to the drawing board after constant losses but it is busy dislodging duly elected governments in state after state. However, they could not do donkey trading in Kerala – the Communists’ last citadel.

    In 2020, Adah Sharma while commenting on the casting couch, had opined that the casting couch is everywhere and there is no guarantee that even after going through this, one can get a role in the film. “I think you always have a choice of whether you want to sit on it, lay on it, stand on it, or not do anything on the couch. You can sit on the floor,” she quipped. So, there is no meaty role but only meat in the film industry. Adah opted to move from sleaze to lies and propaganda. She fell for the Kerala Story!

    Palakkad Lok Sabha seat will not be a cakewalk either for Adah Sharma or the BJP in 2024. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Communist candidate romped home. The Congress stood second and the BJP was a distant third. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai may be salivating with the thought of fielding Tamil-speaking Adah Sharma from Coimbatore.

    कहते हैं मोहब्बत सोच के नहीं होती… बस हो जाती है… प्यार और शादी यूं तो निहायत ही निजी मामला है. कौन किससे प्यार या शादी करना चाहता है, यह हम या आप नहीं जानते… इसकी ख़बर तो सिर्फ उन दो दीवानों को होती है, जो एक-दूसरे के इश्क व मुहब्बत में डूबे हुए होते हैं… हालांकि वैज्ञानिक इसे केमिकल लोचा भी बताते हैं…

    लेकिन जब इस मामले में भी राजनीति आ जाती है, तो इस प्यार को लोग नाम देना शुरू कर देते हैं और मामला “लव जिहाद” जैसे शब्द का बन जाता है.

    पिछले कई दिनों से ऐसी ख़बरें लगातार आ रही हैं कि ‘लव जिहाद’ जैसा कोई षड्यंत्र इस देश में चल रहा है. इसमें मुसलमान लड़के साजिश के तहत हिंदू लड़कियों को अपने प्यार के जाल में फंसाते हैं. इनसे शादी करते हैं और जब शादी हो जाती है, तो जबरन इन्हें मुसलमान बना डालते हैं. इस बात में कितनी सच्चाई है, ये तो वो राजनीतिक दल ही बता सकती है, जिसने इस देश में इस मुद्दे को हवा दी. अपने राजनीतिक बहसों में शामिल किया.

    जेएनयू कैम्पस में भी ‘लव जिहाद’बहस में रहा. नुक्कड़ नाटक के माध्यम से इसकी चर्चा भी हुई. इस सिलसिले में हमने स्टूडेंट यूनियन व कई पार्टियों के छात्र विंग के सदस्यों से बातचीत की.

    सभी छात्र नेताओं ने ‘लव जिहाद’ जैसे शब्द को अपने-अपने तरीके से बयां किया. AISF के एक छात्र नेता नाम न प्रकाशित करने की शर्त पर बताते हैं कि जनता को असल मुद्दे से भटकाने के लिए ‘लव जिहाद’ जैसे मुद्दे को सामने लाकर किसी खास धर्म को निशाना बनाया जा रहा है. उन्होंने आगे कहा कि किसी खास धर्म के लिए जिहाद जैसा नारा तब लगाया जाता है जब समाज में उस धर्म के लिए असंतोष को बढ़ावा देना हो.

    वहीं AISA के एक सदस्य नाम न प्रकाशित करने के शर्त पर बताते हैं कि बीजेपी ऐसे मुद्दों को उठाती है, जो सांप्रदायिकता के आधार पर समाज को बांटने का काम करती है. वो यह भी बताते हैं कि उन्हें आरएसएस के नवीनतम अभियान में राजनैतिक चाल नज़र आ रही है, जो अपना एजेण्डा आगे बढ़ाने के लिए हिन्दू जनता को मूर्ख बनाने के लिए है. साथ ही उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि लव और जिहाद कभी एक साथ नहीं हो सकते. किसी भी धर्म को दिल से व आपसी रजामंदी से अपनाया जाता है न कि जर्बदस्ती…

    इतना ही नहीं, ABVP के भी एक सदस्य अपना नाम न प्रकाशित करने की शर्त पर बताते हैं कि ‘लव जिहाद’का सीधा अर्थ दुर्भावनावश किया गया प्रेम और विवाह है. हक़ीक़त में हम इसे प्रेम भी नहीं कह सकते हैं. ‘लव जिहाद’ का कंसेप्ट ही किसी की इच्छा के विरूद्ध प्यार व शादी के नाम पर उसका गैर इस्लाम से इस्लाम में धर्मांतरण कराना है.

    फिर वो आगे बताते हैं कि प्यार में विवाह के नाम पर किसी के साथ धोखाधड़ी कर उसके जीवन को बर्बाद करने की इज़ाज़त हमारे यहां न तो कोई धर्म देता है और न ही कोई कानून…फिर चाहे वह इस्लाम धर्म हो या हिंदू धर्म या कोई अन्य धर्म…

    आगे की बातों में उन्होंने केरल में हो रहे ‘लव जिहाद’ की घटनाओं का ज़िक्र किया. साथ ही उन्होंने कहा कि वो किसी धर्म के विरुद्ध नहीं, बल्कि उस अत्याचार और शोषण के विरुद्ध हैं, जो धर्म के आड़ में कुछ लोगों द्वारा अंजाम दिया जा रहा है.

    मोहब्बत और इस जिहाद नामी जंग के बारे में SFI के एक सदस्य नाम न प्रकाशित करने की शर्त पर बताते हैं कि चाहे ‘लव जिहाद’ का मामला हो या यूनिफार्म सिविल कोर्ट का या  आर्टिकल-370का या फिर राम मंदिर फिर से बनाने की बात हो… इन सब मुद्दों पर बीजेपी की आइडोलॉजी हमेशा से बहुत खतरनाक रही है.

    वो आगे बताते हैं कि आज़ादी से लेकर अब तक हमारे देश में सभी धर्म के लोग एक साथ पूरे भाईचारा के साथ रहते आये हैं. यह बहुत शर्मनाक है कि बीजेपी ‘लव जिहाद’ जैसे मुद्दे उठाकर लोगों को क्रिटिकली पोलोराइज करना चाहती है, क्योंकि ये एक ऐसा मुद्दा है जहां आम आदमी दिमाग से ज्यादा दिल से सोचता है.

    कन्सर्न स्टूडेन्ट्स से जुड़े अभय कुमार जो कि जेएनयू में शोध छात्र हैं और 2012 में निर्दलीय उम्मीदवार के रूप में छात्र संघ का चुनाव लड़े थे, का कहना है किमोदी की सरकार ने सत्ता में आने से पहले जो बड़े-बड़े वादे किये थे.देश में भ्रष्टाचार खत्म कर देंगे. महंगाई जड़ से ख़त्म कर ‘अच्छे दिन’ ला देंगे. लेकिन ऐसा कुछ भी होता नहीं दिख रहा है. बल्कि उनके सारे वायदे रेत की तरह ढ़हते नज़र आ रहे हैं.

    वो बीजेपी के तारीख से लेकर अब तक के राजनीती काल को दर्शाते हुए बताते कि इन्हें हमेशा से चंद ऐसे मुद्दे चाहिए ही होते हैं, जो लोगों के रोटी, कपड़ा, मकान, रोज़गार जैसे मुद्दों से हटा कर साम्प्रदायिकता के मुद्दे से जोड़ के रखे और लोगों में नफ़रत की आग धधकती रहे.

    वो ‘लव जिहाद’ जैसे मामले को खारिज करते हुए बताते हैं कि सिर्फ मुसलमान लड़के ही हिन्दू लड़कियों से शादी नहीं करते, बल्कि हिन्दू लड़के भी मुसलमान लड़कियों से शादी करते हैं. शुरू से ही समाज में ऐसी शादियां होती आ रही हैं, जिसमें हिन्दू मुसलमान के साथ, मुसलमान हिन्दू के साथ,दलित अपर कास्ट के साथ, अपर कास्ट ने दलित के साथ शादी की है. और जहां प्यार होता है, वहां जिहाद नहीं होता. ये सरासर केन्द्र सरकार की सोची समझी चाल है.

    जेएनयू कैम्पस हमेशा से हर मुद्दे पर मुखर रही है. लेकिन शायद यह पहली बार हो रहा था कि इस ‘लव जिहाद’ के मुद्दे पर मीडिया से बातचीत करने के लिए दूर भागते नज़र आएं. ज़्यादातर छात्रों ने इस मुद्दे पर बात करने से ही इन्कार कर दिया और जिसने भी बात की उन्होंने अपना नाम न प्रकाशित करने की शर्त रख दी. लेकिन एक सच यह भी है कि मीडिया के नज़रों से दूर इस मुद्दे पर जमकर बहस इस कैम्पस में जारी है….

    भारत में हर साल सैकड़ों युवा पुरुष और महिलायें प्यार के रिश्ते में बंधते हैं. वे अपने माता-पिता, जाति और धार्मिक विचारों और परंपराओं को चुनौती देते हैं. उनमें से कई भागकर शादी कर लेते हैं; कुछ अन्य परिवार के दबाव में आकर हार मान लेते हैं और परंपरागत रूप से अधिक स्वीकार्य भूमिकाओं के लिये अपने क़दम वापस खींच लेते हैं.

    बॉलीवुड फिल्म उद्योग इस तरह की कहानियों पर ही फल-फूल रहा है. हम रुपहले पर्दे पर इन जोड़ों को देखकर उनके साथ हंसे और रोये हैं. भारत का सुप्रीम कोर्ट बार-बार ऐसे जोड़ों की सुरक्षा और सहायता के लिए आगे आया है.

    यूपी राज्य बनाम लता सिंह मामले में माननीय सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने माना है और निर्देश दिया है कि ‘‘यह एक स्वतंत्र और लोकतांत्रिक देश है, और जब एक व्यक्ति बालिग हो जाता है तो वह अपनी पसंद से शादी कर सकता है. लड़का या लड़की के माता पिता अगर इस तरह के अंतर्जातीय या अंतरधार्मिक शादी की मंजूरी नहीं देते है तो ज्यादा से ज्यादा वे अपने बेटे या बेटी के साथ सामाजिक संबंध खत्म कर सकते हैं, लेकिन वे अपने बेटे या बेटी को आतंकित नहीं कर सकते और न ही वे उनके खिलाफ कोई हिंसक कार्रवाई को अंजाम दे सकते हैं या हिंसा भड़का सकते हैं.

    साथ ही माता-पिता द्वारा अपने ऐसे बच्चों को परेशान भी नहीं किया जा सकता है. ऐसे में हम देश भर के प्रशासनिक/पुलिस अधिकारियों को यह निर्देश देते हैं कि वे ध्यान रखेंगे कि अगर कोई बालिग लड़का या लड़की एक बालिग औरत या मर्द के साथ अंतरजातीय या अंतरधार्मिक वैवाहिक संबंध स्थापित करता है, तो ऐसे दंपत्ति को न तो किसी के द्वारा परेशान किया जाए और न ही उन्हें आतंकित किया जाये और न ही उनके खिलाफ कोई हिंसक कार्रवाई की जाये, और अगर कोई खुद आतंकित करने या परेशान करने या हिंसा की कार्रवाई को अंजाम देने में शामिल रहता है या इसे उकसाता है तो पुलिस को ऐसे लोगों के खिलाफ आपराधिक कार्यवाही के तहत मामला गठित करना चाहिए और साथ ही ऐसे लोगों के खिलाफ कानून के मुताबिक कठोर कार्रवाई की जानी चाहिए.

    हम कभी-कभी अपनी मर्जी से अंतरजातीय या अंतरधार्मिक विवाह करने वाले व्यक्तियों के ‘ऑनर किलिंग’  के बारे में सुनते हैं. ऐसी हत्याओं में ‘सम्माननीय’ कुछ भी नहीं है, और वास्तव में यह और कुछ नहीं बल्कि ऐसे क्रूर, सामंती विचारधारा वाले व्यक्तियों द्वारा की गई बर्बर और शर्मनाक हत्या की है जो कठोर दंड के पात्र हैं. केवल इस तरह से हम बर्बरता के ऐसे कृत्यों को समाप्त कर सकते हैं.’’

    अरुमुगम सेरवाई बनाम तमिलनाडु राज्य में सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने खाप/कात्ता पंचायतों द्वारा कानून अपने हाथों में लेने और अपनी पसंद के अनुसार शादी करने वालों के निजी जीवन को खतरे में डालने वाली आक्रामक गतिविधियों में लिप्त रहने की परिपाटी की कड़ी निंदा की है.

    विधि आयोग ने एक बिल का सुझाव भी दिया है, जिसका शीर्षक है, ‘‘सम्मान और परंपरा के नाम पर वैवाहिक गठबंधन के साथ हस्तक्षेप का निषेध विधेयक’

    जिहाद को प्रेम के प्राकृतिक और निःस्वार्थ भावना के साथ जोड़ा जा रहा है. एक नया शब्द अर्थात ‘‘लव जिहाद’’ दो समुदायों में फूट डालने और झूठ व नफरत फैलाने के एक नवीनतम हथियार के रूप में संघ द्वारा गढ़ा गया है. वे इस झूठ का प्रचार करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि ऐसे सभी अंतरधार्मिक विवाह जिसमें पुरुष एक मुस्लिम है, वह दुर्भावनापूर्ण है और ऐसा धर्म परिवर्तन और असंख्य बच्चे पैदा कर मुसलमानों की जनसंख्या वृद्धि के एक मात्र उद्देश्य से साथ जान-बूझ कर किया जा रहा है. इसी प्रकाररूढि़वादी मुसलमान एक गैर मुस्लिम के निकाह के बगैर किसी भी अंतरधार्मिक विवाह को स्वीकार करने के लिए तैयार नहीं हैं.

    दक्षिणपंथी धड़ा फूट डालने और समुदायों के बीच नफरत फैलाने के लिए जिस तरह ‘लव जिहाद’ का उपयोग कर रहा है, हम उस तरीके से बहुत चिंतित हैं.

    शब्द ‘लव जिहाद’ ज़रुर एक तेज़ शैतानी दिमाग की उपज है और इसका इस्तेमाल मुस्लिम समुदाय को और बदनाम करने के लिए किया जा रहा है. प्रचार यह किया जा रहा है कि कुछ मुस्लिम संगठनों द्वारा गैर मुस्लिम लड़कियों को लुभाने, उनसे शादी करने और मुस्लिम आबादी को बढ़ाने के लिए मुस्लिम युवाओं को पैसे दिये जा रहे हैं. अफवाह फैलाया जा रहा है कि गैर मुस्लिम लड़कियों को आकर्षित करने के लिए युवाओं को मोटरसाइकिल, मोबाइल आदि खरीदने के लिए पैसे दिए गए हैं.

     भारत में यह शब्द कुछ सालों पहले तटीय कर्नाटक, मंगलोर और केरल के कुछ हिस्सों में प्रचलन में आया. श्रीराम सेना ने हिंदू लड़की-मुस्लिम लड़के वाले प्रेमी जोड़ों पर हमले शुरू किये थे. श्रीराम सेना की स्थापना आरएसएस द्वारा प्रशिक्षित स्वयं सेवक प्रमोद मुतालिक ने की थी. ऐसे प्रेमी जोड़ो के विवाह को संदेह की नज़र से देखा जाने लगा और माता पिता यदि शादी के खिलाफ थे, तो श्रीराम सेना अदालत में मामला ले जाने में मदद करने लगा. इस तर्क के साथ कि लड़की को मुस्लिम लड़के से शादी करने के लिए मजबूर किया गया था.

    कुछ समय से ‘लव जिहाद‘ को हिंदू लड़कियों के जीवन को नियंत्रित करने वाली व्यवस्था के रुप में प्रयोग में लाया जा रहा है.यह एक ऐसा हथियार बना दिया गया है जिससे यह सुनिश्चित किया जा रहा है कि लड़कियों को अपना जीवन साथी चुनने का अधिकार नहीं है और यह शब्द हिंसा भड़काने के लिए भी इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है. सांप्रदायिक हिंसा के अधिकांश मामलों में इस कपट को पकाया जाता है, धीरे-धीरे तैयार किया जाता है.

    अब यह शब्द ‘लव जिहाद’ एक खतरनाक हथियार के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है. व्हाट्स ऐप और फेसबुक पर मौजूद ऐसे कई संदेश इसे मुसलमानों की अंतर्राष्ट्रीय साजिश बताते हुए तैर रहे हैं. पूरी दुनिया में सांप्रदायिक राजनीति और हिंसा ने महिलाओं के शरीर को संघर्ष और सामुदायिक सम्मान के अखाड़े के रुप में प्रयोग किया है. महिला यौनिकता को नियंत्रित किये जाने की मांग की जा रही है क्योंकि इसे संस्कृति, मूल्यों, आस्था और सम्मान के खजाने के रूप में देखा जाता है.

    इस साल रक्षा बंधन के दिन (अगस्त 2014) पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में फैले हुए आरएसएस के स्वयंसेवकों के समूहों ने लोगों को राखी बांधी और उन्हें उस खतरे के प्रति चेताया जो खतरा ‘लव जिहाद’ के नाम पर मुस्लिम युवा उनकी लड़कियों को फंसा कर पेश कर रहे हैं. ‘मुस्लिम युवा हिंदू लड़कियों को फुसला रहे हैं और उन्हें परेशान कर रहे हैं.’, ऐसा कहना वर्तमान में पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश में दुष्प्रचार का मूल संदेश बना दिया गया है.

    संघ इस तथ्य से भी ध्यान हटाने की कोशिश कर रहा है कि सांप्रदायिक हमलों के दौरान अल्पसंख्यक महिलाओं को संगठित रुप से निशाना बनाया जाता है और उनके साथ बलात्कार होता है. ऐसा हुआ है और हो रहा है. गुजरात, कंधमाल एवं मुजफ्फरनगर इसके स्पष्ट उदाहरण हैं. और यह भी महिलाओं की यौनिकता को नियंत्रित करने का एक और तरीका है.

    2009 में केरल उच्च न्यायालय और 2010 में कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय ने पुलिस से ‘लव-जिहाद’ की जांच करने को कहा था. दोनों ही मामलों में पुलिस ने बताया कि मुस्लिम युवकों द्वारा ऐसा कोई संगठित अभियान नहीं चलाया जा रहा था.

    भाजपा की बयानबाजी का जो नया चरण उत्तर प्रदेश में महिलाओं के खिलाफ हो रहे अपराधों को एक सांप्रदायिक रंग देने पर केंद्रित है वह विश्वसनीय तथ्यों पर आधारित नहीं है. एनडीटीवी के आंकड़े बताते हैं कि पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश, जहां मुस्लिम पुरुषों द्वारा हिन्दू महिलाओं के कथित प्रताड़ना को सामने लाने का उग्र अभियान चलाया जा रहा है, में इस साल बलात्कार के ज्यादातर मामलों में महिलाओं को अपने ही समुदाय से पुरुषों द्वारा प्रताडि़त किया गया है.

    उत्तर प्रदेश के 9 जिलों से संबंधित 334 बलात्कार के मामलों में से 25 मामलों में मुस्लिम पुरुष अभियुक्त हैं और हिंदू महिलायें पीडि़त हैं, वहीं 23 मामलों में हिंदू पुरुष अभियुक्त हैं और मुस्लिम महिलायें पीडि़त हैं, 96 मामलों में मुस्लिम पुरुष अभियुक्त हैं और मुस्लिम महिलायें ही पीडि़त हैं और 109 मामलों में हिंदू पुरुष अभियुक्त हैं और हिंदू महिलायें ही पीडि़त हैं.

    अंतरधार्मिक, अंतरजातीय विवाह के खिलाफ इस तरह का अभियान न केवल एक विविधतापूर्ण और बहुरंगी समाज की भावना के खिलाफ हैं, बल्कि वे महिलाओं की यौनिकता को नियंत्रित करना चाहते हैं और चुनावी एवं राजनीतिक उद्देश्यों के लिए सांप्रदायिक आधार पर समाज में फूट डालना भी उनका मक़सद है.

    क्या हम प्रेम को उन लोगों के द्वारा नए सिरे से परिभाषित करने देंगे जिन्होंने सही मायनों में कभी प्रेम को महसूस ही नहीं किया है?

    वास्तविकता यह है कि देश भर में हजारों प्रेमी जोड़े दक्षिणपंथी हिंदू संगठनों और रूढि़वादी मुस्लिम समूहों, दोनों को धता बता रहे हैं और अंतरधार्मिक और अंतरजातीय विवाह कर रहे हैं. हमारा यकीन है कि अंतरजातीय और अंतर धार्मिक विवाह भविष्य में एक संगठित और मजबूत भारत का निर्माण करेगा.

    हम उन सभी से अपील करना चाहते हैं, जो यह मानते हैं कि प्यार प्राकृतिक है न कि एक मिशन है; जो आस्था, जाति, क्षेत्र, लिंग, भाषा जैसे मानव निर्मित मतभेदों के ऊपर उठकर प्यार, लैंगिक समानता, शांति और मानवता का सम्मान करते हैं; कि वे सांप्रदायिक ताकतों के एक सीमित समाज निर्माण के ऐसे सभी तरह के प्रयासों के खिलाफ आवाज उठाने में हमारे साथ आयें.

    Love Jihad: From Illusory Slogan to Potent Weapon

    The country is yet to recover from the aftermath of Muzaffranagar violence (October 2013). This violence was engineered over a period of time in the areas of Western UP, where Jats and Muslims had thick social interaction, despite belonging to different economic strata. Communal violence has been instigated, engineered earlier on various issues like Cow slaughter, Babri demolition, ‘sexual assault on ‘our women’ amongst others. The primary weapon used to communalize this region was the community honor. ‘Muslim youth teasing and luring Hindu girls’ was made the central part of propaganda. While other factors like role of Sangh Parivar components in uploading the video clip, in mobilizing the Hindus in the name of Bahu-Beti Bachao, have been discussed, one needs also to look at the way this ‘saving our daughters’, Love Jihad, from the Muslims had been operated in the area.

    Love Jihad: From Illusory Slogan to Potent WeaponFor couple of years the deliberate teasing of the girls was planned in the area in and around Muzaffarnagar. Rumors abounded and the word Love Jihad was propagated. (Evil stalks the land: Anhad Report on Muzaffanagar violence). The falsehood of Muslim boy talking to Hindu girls to lure them to marry and so to convert to Islam was heavily publicized. The major concoction around which the riot was engineered also related to the Hindu girl being teased by Muslim boys.

    The word “love Jihad’ which played a major role in mobilizing the Hindu community for violence, has a strange history. As such the two components of this word Love Jihad, who so ever manufactured it, have a very different meaning. Since 9/11 2001 the word Jihad has been employed in the popular media and has also become part of the ‘social common sense’. Contrary to the meaning of the word Jihad in Koran, which means striving, it came be projected as killing of non-Muslims. The word Love Jihad must be a creation of an evil genius and it has come to be used to further demonize the Muslim community. The propaganda has been that some Muslim organizations are funding Muslim youth, to lure the non Muslim girls, to marry them and to increase the Muslim population. These youth are given money to buy motorbike, mobile etc and lure the non Muslim girls.

    While doing Google search, if you type, ‘why Hindu Girls are’, the other sentence which pops up on the search engine is ‘are attracted to Muslim boys”! Recently in Maharashtra, a group “Hindu Rakshak Samiti has been claiming to save Hindu religion by breaking up the Hindu Muslim couples, if the girl happens to be a Hindu girl. Not that there are too many such couples, just a suspicion and these self appointed guardians of Hinduism pounce on the boy. A booklet in Marathi on Love Jihad shows a Muslim boy riding the Motor bike, with Hindu girl riding pillion. The word has been so popularized that even a Christian group in Kerala allied with the Sangh progeny, VHP to stop this non existing phenomenon.

    In India the word began to be used in coastal Karnataka, Mangalore, and in parts of Kerala. It was Sri Ram Sene founded by RSS trained Swayam Sevak, Pramod Mutalik, which started attack on Hindu girl-Muslim boy couples. The marriages of such combinations started being looked at with suspicion and if parents were opposed to the marriage, Sri Ram Sene would help to take the matter to the court also. The pretext was that the girl has been forced to marry the Muslim boy. Funnily in the case of Sijalraj and Azghar the judge of Karnatak High Court, went on to give the ruling, that the facts (Love Jihad) had “national ramifications… concern security, besides the question of unlawful trafficking of women,”! So it ordered the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police to hold a thorough investigation into to ‘love jihad’. Pending that, the girl was asked to stay with her parents. The case was that of a simple Hindu Muslim marriage and the girl stood to her version and refused to bow to the social pressures. The police investigation showed that the ‘love Jihad’ is a cooked up one with no substance whatsoever.

    In a similar case earlier the Kerala High court while hearing the appeal from two parents passed a similar order. Two Hindu girls had eloped and got converted to Islam and planned to get married. Kerala court also ordered the police authorities to investigate this phenomenon. The police investigation again showed that there is no such phenomenon as Love Jihad. The organizational promotion of such marriages is a hoax but has become part of social understanding.

    Shri Ram Sene propaganda stated that over 4000 Hindu girls have been lured into conversions. This concoction was aggressively put across through various mechanisms. This laughable, figment of imagination spread like wild fire and frightened the parents. The trajectory of many of these girls who initially state about their love for the boy and voluntary conversion, changes many a times after they are forced to stay with their parents. Under a sort of emotional blackmail, some girls give in and later say that they were brain washed, shown a Jihadi CD and what not.

    We have witnessed such acts in the form of propaganda in Gujarat in the wake of carnage, that ‘Muslim boys are luring Adivasi girls’. There Babu Bajarangi, who was also a major participant in carnage and is currently in jail undergoing life imprisonment, formed a goon-gang. This gang attacked couples and forced them to separate if they belonged to different religions. All this is presented as defense of religion! At another level inter-caste, inter-religious marriages are a normal natural part of a plural society. With rise of the communal politics, these inter-religious marriages are being opposed very dangerously. We have the case of Rijwan Ur Rehman married to Priyanka Todi, daughter of an affluent and powerful business magnate of Kolkata. She was forced to turn around under emotional blackmail from parents and relatives. The details were not known, what is known is that later Rijwan Ur Rehman was forced to commit suicide. In all such cases the role of police, state machinery, has been totally against the spirit and provisions of law, the protectors of law acting to support the things totally against the law.

    Such campaigns against inter-religion, inter-caste marriages are not only against the spirit of national integration they also aim to control the lives of girls in the patriarchal mode. In addition the bogey against a minority is whipped up to aid the divisive politics. It is a double bonus for divisive politics. Since in patriarchal norms women are regarded as property of man and are made to live under the control structure defined by men, such an issue rouses high emotions. The agenda of communal politics targets minorities, Muslims at one level and promotes patriarchal norms at another.

    Over a period of time, from being just a mechanism to control the lives of Hindu girls, a tool to ensure that girls don’t have the right to choose their own life partners, this phrase has been used to instigate violence as witnessed in Muzaffarnagar. Most of the pretexts of communal violence are cooked up, gradually manufactured. This Love Jihad has by now become a dangerous weapon. On one side it demonizes the Muslim youth in the negative light and on the other it has the aim to curb the freedom of women. The politics in the name of religion, the politics of Sangh Parivar here in India or that of Taliban’s in Afghanistan, Islamic fundamentalists, or even Christian fundamentalists all operate on the same wavelength as far as crushing the rights of women is concerned. In line with this starting from Sri Ram Sene, to Babu Bajrangi to those orchestrating violence in Muzzafarnager, they all operate on the premise, that women are the property of men and their lives have to be controlled.

    The truth is not the issue here; the myth has been drilled in to the thinking of society. This phrase has double edged nature, which is something we need to register and combat. This phrase has tragically become a powerful concoction in the hands of communal forces.
