New Delhi: Congress and Trinamool today reached a seat sharing deal for the forthcoming assembly elections in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress has agreed to give 65 seats to the Congress as part of the compromise formula. This after Pranab Mukherjee spoke to Mamata Banerjee after a meeting with Sonia Gandhi.

“In West Bengal, Congress will contest 65 seats and TMC will contest 229. We will work in close cooperation to win the election to defeat the Left from the state,” said Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed.

“We are happy that Congress will fight with us to oust the Left,” said Mamata Banerjee.

Mamata had earlier offered 64 seats to the Congress against the demand for 98 seats.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had sprung a surprise on Congress on Friday by unilaterally announcing her party’s decision to contest 228 seats.

Trinamool had made the announcement despite Congress seeking some more time as it could not reach a consensus on either the number of seats or the constituencies to be shared.
