CEC Dismisses Charges of Biases

BeyondHeadlines News Desk

Chennai: All charges of biases in its actions have been quashed by the Election Commission. Clearing the air Chief Election Commissioner said that EC decisions are “not directed against anyone.”

On charges by some leaders in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal that the EC is bias, CEC S.Y. Quraishi said, “It is totally unwarranted. All decisions at the Commission are taken unanimously.”

He has previously called TN assembly election a “challenging case” and denied DMK and PMK charges that a kind of emergency is imposed in the state. He, however, accepted that the EC cannot “close its eyes to rampant malpractices.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is believed to have said: “Right from the beginning, he (CEC) has been taking a confrontationist stand. He is trying to show off his authority by suppressing existing electoral practices.”

Quraishi has denied these charges saying, “These are not directed against anyone” and the Commission “believes in fair play.” He further added, “There was no question of bias. We go by rules,”
