New Delhi: The Police cracked down on Team Anna early morning today and detained Anna Hazare and his close aides from Mayur Vihar in Delhi.
The police crackdown came as all talk between Delhi Police in and Team Anna failed on the conditions of fast that was to begin today.
Home secretary RK Singh has meanwhile told the press that as he announced yesterday that he will defy prohibitory orders, he and his aides have been detained.
Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran bedi have also been detained from Rajghat.
The political class and people have reacted sharply to the detention and government’s ‘outrageous’ behavior.
Anna camp meanwhile announced that they will move to the Supreme Court.
Earlier Hazare also addressed the people of the nation on pre recorded Independence Day speech asking people to court arrest: “jail bharo“.
“My dear countrymen, second freedom struggle has begun and now I have also been arrested. But will this movement be stopped by my arrest. No not at all. Don’t let it happen,” Hazare also said.
“I am not surprised at this development. This is the direction in which this government is moving. Instead of dealing with the problem of corruption and owning responsibility it is trying to find scapegoats and stopping peaceful protests,” Advani said.
Kiran Bedi has called government’s action undemocratic: “Emergency has revisited the country. This detention is undemocratic and unconstitutional.”
Around 500 supporters were with Anna at the time of his detention.
