Gunfire Outside US Embassy in Kabul; Taliban Claims Responsibility

KABUL, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) — Six security personnel were injured in gun battle with militants as a fifth blast was heard in the Afghan capital Kabul on Tuesday, police said.

“The incident happened in Char Rahi Abdul Haq area closed to U. S. embassy and NATO-led ISAF headquarters,” police told Xinhua.

Police cordoned off the area and gun battle continued, Xinhua reporter on the spot witnessed.

The first explosion broke out at around 13:20 local time (0850 GMT), and gun battle followed.

Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, a purported spokesman for Taliban, told media via telephone from unknown location that a group of Taliban fighters equipped with arms and suicide vests targeted U.S. embassy and other foreign agencies offices around.

The attackers have occupied a tall building and apparently targeted U.S. embassy and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters.
