Local Community Condemns Jamia Millia’s Affidavit

Kamala Kanta Dash, BeyondHeadlines

New Delhi. There is deep disappointment and anger in the local community against the use of objectionable words in the Jamia Millia Islamia’s affidavit at Delhi High Court.  BH is in possession of the hard copy of the affidavit. The affidavit was submitted to the court in response to a PIL requesting to hold student union elections in Jamia Millia Islamia. However, Jamia rejected the appeal and chose to respond to the PIL rather harshly. The local community members and the Residents Welfare Association (RWA) of Jamia Nagar have written to the President, the Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Pervez Hashmi and Shahnawaz Hussain and have requested the removal of the Registrar and the VC. The local community has planned for a protest to be held today after the Friday prayer.

The content of the letter is reproduced below:

 To,

The Prime Minister of India

Sub: Representation against highly objectionable remarks made by vice Chancellor and Registrar on behalf of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi.

Respected Sir,

It is to inform you that as a student has filled a PIL bearing W. P. (C) No. 917/2012 for restoration of democracy in Jamia Millia Islamia by way of holding student union election, which was dissolved on 31.03.2006 and since then there is no Student union or representative for student in Jamia Millia Islamia.

It is further information you that Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia and Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia has filed an affidavit dated 12.04.2012 in the said PIL bearing W. P. (C) No. 917 of 2012 on behalf of Jamia Millia Islamia making highly objectionable remarks in para V page 14 of the said affidavit which is as under:

“Even today, sinister, sinister attempts continued to be made by undesirable element who tend to gain and thrive in a disturbed environment. Extra care has necessarily to be taken to ensure that the delicate and fragile peace as endured and initiated on the Campus through care and attention and the concerned efforts of the academic administrators does not go waste. From the said context, this Hon’ble Court may also kindly take into account the geographic local of Jamia Millia Islamia. The University campus is abutting and surrounded by slum clusters like the Batla House, Zakir Nagar, Azeem Dairy, GhaffarManzil etc. Student ‘distractions’ are easy to come (overwhelming majority to the students are first time leaners) and can be rampantly exploited (by raising emotive/sensitive issues) by petty politicians, the building mafia and land Shark.”

This news has been published in various newspapers including The Rashtriya Sahara Delhi Edition on 19th April 2012. Copies of the said news reports dated 19.04.2012 are enclosed.

The statement made by Vice-Chancellor and Registrar on behalf of Jamia Millia Islamia is highly objectionable and the residents of entire area are raising objections on the statements saying that Jamia Millia Islamia has no authority to make such objectionable remarks and condemn the same.

It is therefore requested to you that an action be taken against those who had made such objectionable remarks with malafide and bad intention to brand the particular community (Muslims) residing in the said area i.e. Batla House, Azeem Dairy, Ghaffar Manzil and Zakir Nagar etc. and guilty be punished. It is further requested that both the Vice-chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia and the Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia should be removed from their respective posts for malafidely making such highly objectionable remarks as stated above.

Thanking You

Haris-Ul-Haq

(Secretary)

Jamia Nagar Residents Welfare Association
