New Delhi: Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission of India against the custodial death of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay who died at 6:30 am today at PGIMER, Chandigarh due to multiple organ failure. Sanaullah was attacked in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu on 3 May 2013, widely believed to be in retaliation for the murderous assault on Sarabjit Singh at the Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore, Pakistan.

Sanaulla’s Custodial Death Taken Up with NHRC, India Urged to Pay Compensation of Rs 25 Lakhs

“The custodial death of Sanaullah is a shameful incident for India which had failed to ensure safety and security of Pakistani prisoners in India despite credible apprehension about the attacks on Pakistani prisons following the murderous assault on Sarabjit Singh. This incident has proven that there is no difference in the conduct of the prison officials in India and Pakistan.” – stated Mr Suhas Chakma, Director of Asian Centre for Human Rights.

Asian Centre for Human Rights also recommended the NHRC to instruct the Government of India to order a judicial inquiry, to make the judicial inquiry report public within one month, and pay compensation of Rs 25 lakhs to the next of kin of deceased Sanullah Ranjay.
