Indian women are still not safe, and the menace of dowry is not letting many married women live peacefully. A new incident in Begusarai, Bihar is heartrending for those who love and respect their sisters.

Bihar’s Pushpam Becomes Another Victim of DowryUttam Kumar’s sister Pushpam was tortured, burnt, beaten and killed in front of her small son – just because she could not fulfil the dowry demand of her in-laws.

Kumar says soon after marriage of her sister into the Kumar Rai family twelve years ago, her husband and in-laws started demanding money as dowry.

On 11th May 2013, Pushpam’s son witnessed that his mother has been brutally beaten up and murdered for the sin she did not commit. How this incident could shape the child is hard to imagine, but his uncle (Kumar) has vowed to fight for justice and end dowry in his region.

Mr. Kumar said he immediately filed an FIR at the local police station, but the police failed to take action as it often happens in many such incidents across the country. Rather the police asked the victims to compromise, if they wanted this case to go in their favour (sic). The culprits have not been arrested yet, lamented Kumar.

“My nephew talks about his mother’s death everyday. I want justice for my sister. But as a brother who couldn’t do anything to save his sister, I also want to ensure that no woman ever suffers her plight in my district Begusarai in Bihar,” Mr. Kumar said.

Kumar has singed a petition on Change.org, if you too want justice be done to his sister, please sign the petition here.
